May be time for a new PC - suggestions?
« on: March 28, 2012, 11:37:41 pm »

I'm struggling with performance with my old 32bit windows 7 notebook.

Any suggestions for a 64bit notebook?

Any suggestions for a 64bit windows desktop?

Main suggestion I'm looking for is brand. Also, I don't want to build anything myself.

I considered a MacBook Pro or Mac Pro but they are too expensive for me.

Note that a transition from 32->64 bit is not any kind of 'performance guarantee'.

Often more ram and a faster hard drive are a better spend of $$ than a 64 bit processor and OS.

Putting an SSD into your old notebook would make it feel a lot faster.

And I didn't know you could buy computers already put together.  That could save me a lot of time :P

As I say to all such posts: ASrock :)
I'm never building a HTPC again after I've tried this. I'm very happy.

I neglected to mention the purpose of the PC which may impact recommendations.

I need a PC that can handle video and picture editing. This is the main reason I'm looking for a 64bit machine, not for the speed but for the ability to escape the 32bit memory limitations. Of course I also use the PC for the usual tasks (web, email, music, ...). And I have a handful of must have apps that only run on windows (MC + a few more) so even if I had a Mac I would need to use Parallels for Windows assuming that actually works for my usage.

If you want a serious video editing machine, I think you should try to avoid the ASRock machines. Though they might work sufficiently for some lighter video editing tasks. I don't have much experience in this field, so I'll leave the real recommendations to video editors.

How low is your budget? If you can't afford a Macbook Pro then either way we're looking at a compromise - as regardless of the (lack of, in many cases) merits of the Apple gear, it's generally priced pretty much at the starting level of what at least I'd call decent stuff even in non-Apple-land.

I've not really set a budget. For me anyway the longer I think about it the higher the budget goes.

Another option I've been considering is getting a Mac (either an iMac or a Macbook Pro) when the new models come out which I'm guessing will happen over the next couple of months and keeping my current PC as the Windows machine instead of using Parallels Desktop on the Mac.  That way neither environment is compromised. What I don't know is can I have my music/images/movies on some storage that can be accessed and updated from both the Mac & the Windows PC.

If I go down the path of a new Windows PC I may wait until Windows 8 comes out which I'm guessing is August/September.
