reinstalling MC17 after Win7 crash
« on: July 26, 2012, 05:52:16 am »

The harddrive on my Win7 PC is not booting, but I believe I can still retrieve files from it.  I'll be installing a new HD this weekend, but given all the time that went into configuring MC for HDMI output I'd like to have MC install and behave exactly like the old install.  My question is about how to find the old MC17 configuration files (if there is such a thing), and using it for reinstalling MC(?)

TIA  :)

Most of MC's config is in the Windows registry, which means you can't retrieve them without booting, unfortunately.

However, you should be able to get two things, which if working, will be just as good:

1. Your library files themselves.
2. A recent auto-backup.

Did you ever change the locations of these things in MC?

I was about to add to my OP that my library is stored and backed up elsewhere.  However, I was unaware of "auto-backup"(?)

Edit:  it would be good if "autobackup" included the export of the MC registry entries as a 'reg' file(?)

Backups now also contain settings.

They do.  Not as a REG file, but it includes all the settings.  That's why I asked about it.

If you have a recent autobackup ZIP file (MC makes these at regular intervals automatically), then you'll be fine.

Is an "autobackup" the same as "library" backup? (... in which case I would have a recent backup...)

Thanks Glynor & JimH!  :)
