This is for all the frustrated IPod owners who can't use the beloved gadget with their beloved Media Jukebox .
I think everybody who used XPlay agrees that this product SUCKS. It's lightyears away from ITunes (i know it's still beta but i can hardly imagine that the finished product will be any better. What sucks most is that it's integrated into Windows Media Player). Especially for people who are used to the comfort of MJ this is terribly annoying. One of my biggest concerns was how to transfer playlists (the ones i have in MJ) to the IPod. Here's a little workaround until JRiver has convinced Mediafour that MJ would be a far better solution for their product (to everybody at JRiver: go go go go! I'm so glad you're working on this. I'd be more than happy to beta (or alpha)test anything and everything that arises from your cooperation with MediaFour
).
OK, here's how i did it:
1. First of all, you need do download and install
XPlay.
2. Now you can access your IPod from MJ, but ONLY as a plain harddisk. The files you transfer can't be played on the IPod (yet).
3. in MJ, right click on the playlist you want to transfer and choose "Send To > Device". now you should see the drive letter of you IPod. Click on it to quene the files for transfer.
4. If MJ doesn't switch to the "CD, DVD, & Handhelds" automatically, go there now and select your ipod (the drive letter).
5. Here you should see all the files of your playlist. Upload the files to your IPod.
6. Now open Windows Explorer and go to your IPod (listed as "Removable Disk"). In the root folder there should be all the files of the playlist you just transferred.
7. go to the "XPlay Music" folder and then open the playlists folder. create a new playlist (preferably the same name as in MJ ). Make sure that the playlists folder is expanded in the folder tree of explorer.
8. Now go back to the root folder of the IPod and just drag all the MP3s in there to the playlist you just created. the files are automaticall moved. you don't have to delete them manually. Make sure you don't select any other data items you might have stored on the IPod.
9. That's it! Unplug the IPod and select the playlists menu. your new playlists should be listed now
.
I hope this info is useful for some of you. I know it's a cumbersome procedure but it's the best solution i came up with some far. But maybe we can all sync out IPods with MJ in the near future (Keeping my fingers crossed those conference calls with Mediafour were fruitful ).
If anybody needs more advice just post your question to the forum. Any better solutions than mine are very welcome of course
.
