Linked Zones w/ USB DAC and Subwoofer ONLY
« on: April 26, 2012, 03:33:56 pm »

I have 2 zones .. my Klipsch 5.1 speakers via coax out of a soundcard and my mini Maggies via a USB DAC.  I'd like to try to supplement the Maggies with the Klipsch subwoofer (ONLY, ie, none of the other 5.1 speakers).  I can link and play the 2 zones together, but cannot seem to turn off output to the 5.1 speakers OTHER THAN the Klipsch subwoofer.  Is there any way to configure MC such that I output only to the Maggies and the Klipsch sub?

You can use DSP Studio > Parametric Equalizer to mute and cross-over lines.

However, if you have Klipsch computer speakers like the ones I'm familiar with, the subwoofer isn't on its own line.  In other words, the Klipsch have 5.0 input and internally convert to 5.1.

If you're doing this for a critical listening environment, I'd recommend getting a multi-channel DAC instead of trying to link two DACs together.  Zone linking is good for linking between rooms, but not good for linking where tiny amounts of drift could be disruptive.

Thanks, Matt.  The Klipsch's are Promedia Ultra 5.1 and DO have a separate line for sub.  Actually, I do coax out from soundcard to a sound processor that does 6 line out's to the Klipsch line in's.  The sound processor lets me toggle between different sources (eg, cable STB) on the way to Klipsch's.  The other zone is USB out to HRT Music Streamer DAC to amp to Maggies.  I'd like to add more heft to Maggie low-end w/o adding another sub under the desk (hardly enuf leg room the way it is).  Thought I could link zones and shut off all but sub ... I guess you're saying I can (but may not want to) with parametric equalization?  Apparently it's not possible with room correction?

It's possible, and easy.  I just don't know if you'll love the results.

Create a zone "Klipsch Subwoofer".  Set it up mostly like your regular Klipsch zone.  But then add a mute to Parametric Equalizer to silence all the channels except the subwoofer.

Then link the "HRT DAC" zones and "Klipsch Subwoofer" zones and give it a shot.  Volume is going to be a little tricky since linked zones have independent volume controls.
