Files Failed To Import
« on: February 07, 2012, 02:50:55 pm »

Hi Guys - I just imported some music but a few tracks failed to import. Here is the failed to import information. Are the file names too long or do they contain certain characters that aren't allowed? Or something else entirely?

Thanks!

Could you provide one of the files to me (matt at jriver dot com) and I'll test it here?

Thanks.

Thanks for the file.  The issue is the filename length.

We reject local files (non URLs) when their paths are longer than 260 characters.  This is the normal shell limit.

We have been doing this a long time (since at least 2007, probably longer).

We rarely (maybe never) use fixed buffer sizes, so it would likely be safe to remove the restriction or make it much larger.

However, I'd like to understand how filenames like this get created.  How did you make files with these names?

How did you make files with these names?

CD was ripped with a Sooloos music server then exported for import into JRiver.

Windows itself gets pretty unhappy about names like this.

For example, open Explorer and do a rename (F2) on one of them.  Notice how it removes the end of the name?

I would report this as a bug to Sooloos ( or rip with Media Center ;) ).

We're brainstorming how we might better handle files like this.

We're still not sure what to do here.

It's easy enough to remove any up-front checking for paths over 260 characters.  It's likely that import and playback would work fine.

But our fear is that this will lead to new problems like "why isn't my sidecar cover art working" or "why isn't the rename tool doing what I expect" or "why does't drag-n-drop work with these files."

Any advice?

I wouldn't worry about it. This is likely a very rare issue. Plus, as long as MC identifies the tracks with issues, as it did in my case, it's easy to fix the tracks.

In a coming build:
Changed: When import skips files because the filenames are too long or because files have the system attribute set, the import summary will show this (and 'Show in-depth summary' will list the files).
