Desktop Stereo System for $70
« on: May 26, 2012, 08:07:43 pm »

For those wanting an inexpensive, yet still apparently *acceptable* system from their PC, I found the following at CNET.com the other day.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13645_3-57439115-47/build-your-own-desktop-stereo-for-under-$70/

The Lepai has gone on my shopping list for the office / mancave when it gets finished (probably a couple of months away) so will let you know my impressions...

I just use a pair of self powered M-Audio AV40s.  They were like $100, I think.  They are an improvement over my old altec lansing computer speakers.

I have a pair speakers from an old snayo all-in-one, so am going to hook those up initially.

I like idea of being able to upgrade the components piece by piece and for $35 for the amp, I can't go too wrong...

I have 2 Klipsch ProMedia 4.1 sets that I have configured as a 7.2 setup, I have a total of $85 and a bit of repair time tied up in them.  ;D
I have heard good things about Dayton Audio products and am considering replacing my Advent/Carver AV550S 15" sub in my TV room with 2 12" Daytons
and reusing the plate amp. The 15 has plenty of quantity but lacks in the quality department as it is rather muddy and monotone below ~35Hz.

My lounge room is currently serviced by a Logitech x530 setup. About $90 if I remember correctly.

It's not too shabby, to be honest...

Give a try to Audioengine. They are superb for the price. You can find them at Amazon.
