I have two audio devices, a stereo HDMI from the gfx card, and the 5.1/7.1 from the PCI sound card. Usually, the HDMI is set as the Windows default. Here is what happens lately: I start playing an audio file with MC and no sound comes from the left front & surround speakers. My "Audio" Zone uses the PCI audio device and converts stereo to 5.1. Going to Sound/Speakers/Properties/Balance reveals only L-R sliders: R=99 and L=18 (or sth. like that).

Are you using WASAPI-Event Style? Tools>Options>Audio Output Mode=

Yes, WASAPI-Event Style exclusive mode.

This isn't a common problem.  Is it possible some other program is making the change?

I can think of two things to try on the MC side:

1) Switch to Internal Volume mode
2) Uncheck Options > Startup > Optimize volume (this is a longshot, since this normally doesn't do anything with Windows 7)

Do either of those make a difference?

Thanks. I haven't been able to reproduce it these days. Maybe it's not related to MC and the Windows audio driver gets confused by defaulting on one device and using the other one. Internal volume is what I use, shouldn't cause the problem. The optimize volume was enabled. I'll keep an eye an post back if necessary.

Happened again today, optimize volume was enabled so I'll set it off and see if I get the problem again. Common to this situation is that Windows has set the TV audio device as default (again, today). What is strange is the two-channel balance settings for the 5.1 audio device. Shouldn't Windows allow balance settings for all channels?

Also, clicking on the speaker icon in the taskbar I get dual volume sliders, since Windows defaults on the TV audio device, and MC uses the audio card. It feels like the balance-level issue derives from there.
