MC handling of the Blu ray audio format, AKA Pure Audio
« on: July 09, 2012, 05:01:27 am »

Pure Audio Blu-ray is a format for delivering high resolution 2 and multichannel PCM based audio (no video) on the blu ray disc format. It is one of the formats chosen by audiophiles and it is becoming more common from a growing number of studios. JRiver's handling of this media falls short of what might be ideal.

1. It places such audio in the video folders (at least by default). It treats it like a blu ray video disc. MOst people would prefer to have these discs with other audio only media. However DVD-AUdio discs are in the same boat.
2. The selection of default number of channels does in the DSP setup options not seem to be respected when launching the media to play. It will default to the disc default. this may be a peculiarity of the pure audio configuration which uses colour coded buttons on the remote to switch codecs on playback.
3. On lower end CPU's typically used in audio only setups, JRiver can struggle to upsample the blu ray stream or it appears to get confused and  decode a different stream. Playback becomes stuttery and intermittent. Wierdly switching streams from 2->multi->2 will cure the stutter.

We need to be able to flag or tag or set an option to place blu ray audio discs in the Audio folders.  Video should be disabled when pure audio discs are played back.

Consideration should be given to having similar capability for DVD-Audio discs, that is to keep them out of the video folders.
