MusicMatch and AutoDJ Feature -- Can MJ "match" MM???
« on: April 28, 2002, 01:43:09 pm »

Folks

I've got this friend who won't switch from MM to MJ.
The reason?  A feature called AutoDJ.  In case you're not familiar, here's the run-down:

The user runs AutoDJ and selects the number of hours of music desirable.  Next, it's then their job to select three different criteria from the following...album, artist, genre, tempo, mood, situation, preference (like rank in MJ i think).  Under say, album then, you select sub-catagories of specific albums.  You can also select all.  Hitting "get tracks" gives you a return based on those stipulations.

Essentially, it's a glorified filter.  I'm not familiar enough with smartlists and such to do this, if there even is a way to replicate such a feature in MJ natively.

That said, is this possible with a reasonable amount of mouse clicks?
If not, anyone find interest in such a plugin?
All I know is JAVA, and I don't even know if MJ handles plugins in JAVA, let alone if I could actually figure out the code.

In all honesty, I like this feature as well.  It really utilizes a big library for a great listening mix.

Any feedback would be cool!!!

I used to use MusicMatch, again primarily because of AutoDJ....but try playing less common file formats in MM......Saying that, an AutoDJ function would be very cool..........

looks like MJ primarily needs a way to pick, at random, songs from a selected list totalling to <= a given time limit.  Can't be too difficult....at least for some of the coding geniuses out there.....right???

starflyer,

Are you using MJ 8? It is listed in the help file. Index > search modifiers.

Can I just tell ya? I used to think the same thing about that AutoDJ feature--and I'll be honest with you, I still use MMJB from time to time because there are one or two things it handles a little better than MJ, interface-wise (mostly mass tagging and stuff).

However, since I discovered Smartlists, AutoDJ has been left in the dust. Smartlists are far more powerful and flexible; you can do everything that AutoDJ can and more besides. You can set both time and filesize limits to your playlist (by default, when that happens, selection is random), and specify percentage of hits for genres and albums or what have you, weighting it.

Nowadays I just have several smartlists set up for CD size and genre preference, and every morning in about 4 clicks my CD is burning and I'm on my way out the door with a fresh "auto-DJ'd" mix. It kicks ass. Try it.

It's OK.  Recognition is the first step on the road to recovery.

I've used Media Juke -- I mean MusicMatch myself -- before.
