apparently this is a downside to using media server as i've discovered although jrmc is shutdown and audio continues, once i right click on the taskbar icon to close the server portion the audio stops.

This is not normally the case.  Are you certain it is just running the Library Server?  MC can also be set to minimize itself to the System Tray, but this is different from the Media Server mode.  Assuming it is happening with just the Library Server, can you confirm this only happens with playing the audio under Connected Media (and not with playback of other, local audio files)?

If so, that sounds like a bug.

Shutting down Media Server will, of course, stop it (because that fully exits MC) but it should not keep playing when the main UI is closed.  In fact, there was a whole discussion around this recently (where some users wanted exactly what you say is bothering you, in other circumstances).

This is actually one of the features / benefits of UPnP.

There are three types of entity involved, namely a Digital Media Server DMS, a Digital Media Renderer DMR, and a Control Point CP. A DMS is something that sources a track, a DMR is something that plays a track, and a CP is something that introduces a DMR to play a track from a DMS.

MC in different circumstances, and in different instances, may be acting as DMS, DMR, and/or CP.

In your case an MC CP instance is telling a DMR instance to play a track from a remote DMS server. Once the DMR has been introduced to the DMS then the DMR can (indeed will) continue to play the track without any further involvement of the CP. So the CP can be turned off, and the playing will continue...

This is a benefit, not a problem..

yea, just tested it again and it's only related to "connected media".  Media Center is shutdown but Media Server is still running and audio from connected media continues to play through the audio channel.  Media Center is not set to minimize to tray and besides i'm using command line execution which closes all except media server.

a work around for now is using the command line which sets to "playing now" before closing which does stop the audio stream.

thanks.

You can also hit Stop on the DMR ..

I have no idea what you're going on about here Andrew.  The OP didn't mention UPnP or DLNA playback in any way, or did I miss it?

Connected Media, for reference, are these things:

yea, just tested it again and it's only related to "connected media".

I'm not getting this same behavior.  I just tested with the PublicRadioFan streams (shown above) and when I close MC's UI, it stops playback.  I couldn't actually get most of the rest of them in there to work at all, or work well, but the PublicRadioFan streams seem to work okay.

So... Perhaps Andrew does understand something about this (despite me not seeing the reference in this thread at least)?  Are you playing to a DLNA device on your network, or is MC playing the audio back directly?

I did notice in further testing that some of the Connected Media items do behave this way.  I think it is a bug, but those Connected Media items aren't working right anyway.  It is essentially just playing the audio inside MC's internal browser.  This stinks because you don't go through MC's audio engine then (it renders it through the embedded browser's engine), so you don't get DSP and internal volume control or any of that stuff.

If you play the PublicRadioFan streams, you'll see how MC is "supposed to handle" the playback.  It happens directly in MC itself, and MC controls the audio.  For these, it will keep playing if you go to Playing Now, and visualizers work and whatnot.

For others, like SomaFM and Icecast, I'm seeing the behavior you're describing, but they're broken anyway.  Some of them, like SomaFM pop up a separate browser "pop-out" window when you start playback, and after you close MC they keep going, but if you close the pop-out window, then they stop.  Others, like the Icecast feeds, do indeed keep playing when you close MC's UI.

That's annoying.  But those Icecast feeds aren't working the way they're supposed to anyway.  They should work the way the PublicRadioFan ones do, but something broke.

Either way, it looks like the browser-based playback isn't stopping when you exit MC.  I bet you can replicate it with YouTube as well.

Yep.  Confirmed.  If you use YouTube in Video > Connected Media, and play the file "within the browser" from the pop-up play dialog, then the behavior is the same.

Description of Bug:

When you exit MC and the Media Server is running, any audio playing within MC's embedded browser is NOT stopped and continues playing.  Once you encounter this, you cannot stop the sound except by: relaunching MC (which will generally change your startup location and stop playback), or exiting Media Server out of the tray.

Steps to Reproduce:

There are multiple ways to reproduce this, but here is an easy and obvious one:

0. Make sure Media Server is enabled such that it automatically starts and runs in your system tray.
1. Open MC in Standard View.
2. Navigate to Tree > Video > Connected Media > YouTube
3. Find a YouTube video that has sound and play it.  If you have it set to always play videos in a certain way, hold Control to get the normal pop-up dialog.
4. When the "playback catcher" dialog appears, choose Show the webpage so that the video plays inside MC's embedded browser instead of in the player.
5. Close MC's UI.
6. Audio from your video continues to play.

This is basically the same issue as the one I mentioned concerning UPnP. Namely that MC is introducing a player sink to a media source and then standing back to let the sink and source talk directly to each other. In such a case it is fine and normal that if you stop the introducer application, the source and sink should still continue to talk to each other. ..

Maybe...  But in this case it is (user-side) pretty darn simple.

MC is playing the file.  You know and I know that it is actually the embedded browser component of MC that is doing the playing, but... MC is playing the file to all normal people.

When you close MC, you can't see the embedded browser anymore.  In fact, if you navigate in MC away from the page at all (to any other View in MC at all) then it does properly stop playback.  So... In what world would you expect audio from your video to keep playing when you've completely closed the MC UI?  Because if you use YouTube and Media Server right now, that's what is happening.

It is broken.  Full stop.
