MC 17 works breifly, now it doesn't
« on: September 16, 2012, 10:53:29 am »

A request for help.  I installed MC 17 trial version which I intend to buy if I can get it working.  It initially played a 24/96 file well, then it crashed (playback not working error message).  Reboot, playback stutters badly.  Reinstall, playback still stutters - all files, all encodings.

I have Windows XP, new Audioquest Dragonfly USB DAC installed as intructed (works with iTunes and internal sound card), and also have Logitech Media Server installed which works fine through network gateway.

I followed set up instructions from JRiver.  Maybe my Windows version is too old?  Still puzzled that it worked at first. I did run a Register Scan and cleanup between install and subsequent problem.  Have not uninstalled and reinstalled as yet since importing my music library took 3 hours.

Thanks for suggestions.

Try reinstall MC again. And don't ever run registry cleanup again!  ;)
Such cleaners are known to corrupt/remove registryentries belonging to MC.

Thanks I'll try this - but to be honest the registry cleaner hasn't caused problems in the past and it improves my computers speed considerably; so I'd consider this an MC issue - not a WinZip issue.  Just saying.

It is easy to test. reinstall MC, make a regdump of "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver", run your cleaner and compare what is in that key afterwards. If it is all in there, then you have one of the better cleaners and we have to look elsewhere for your error.
You should be able to reinstall MC within a couple of minutes as it retains the database and it doesn't need to rescan all your media files. This is in fact what happens everytime when JRiver offers us a new build, it simply reinstalls itself on top of the existing installation.

I did uninstall/reinstall while preserving my library.  As a JR MC new user it will take me some time to get acquainted with the program.  With Logitech, I don't experience audio interruptions if I use my PC while playing music.  I do - and just did opening this forum - when using JR. It may be as simple as having an 'older' PC.

I really appreciate the quick response and help!  Thank you.

I do not own a DAC so not sure but worth a shot...

Under Options - Audio - Audio Output - Output Mode Settings

Try adjusting the Buffering if applicable.

And go through the other options in Output Mode, and DSP & Output Format.
