Is it possible to put some music files on a cd, then later on go back and add more files?

That's true, the disk is closed so you can't add more audio tracks later. If it wasn't close, you wouldn't be able to play it in a standard (non-computer) CD player.

All the above is true.

If you had a player that plays data files (like .mp3, thus "Mp3 Player") as well as audio (.cda) files then you could create a "data" disk that could hold the equivelent of 8-10 CD's (At ~128bps)  Data disks can be left open, and written to later.  Other terms that apply are DAO, Disk At Once, where one write process opens, writes, and closes the disk.  To be able to add later you have to write in TAO, or Track At Once mode.
