Protect mode on Emotiva amplifier triggered by Lynx hardware
« on: January 11, 2013, 06:27:39 pm »

The guys at Lynx were nice enough to send JRiver a Lynx Aurora for testing.

Unfortunately I'm having a weird problem where it triggers protect mode on my Emotiva UPA-7 amplifier.

If you read from the bottom up here, you'll see some more information:

Any ideas for things I could try?

Does the Emotiva work with the MR816X? I have used it with an Emotiva amp with no problems using Markertek XLR to RCA cables.

I have some Hosa XLR ground lift adapters that were included with my amp. They are sometimes needed with the XLR to RCA adapters that were also included with my amp for use with some DACS. Maybe that would take care of the issue?

Is the Aurora 8 USB or Firewire?

I have also read that odd grounding issues can cause noise on the firewire connection. This was sometimes even caused by other equipment on the same circuit. Perhaps you have a grounding issue in your system somewhere that becomes evident with the Lynx/Emotiva combination. Have you ever tried the Lynx/Emotiva in a different environment?

I use a Lynx Aurora in my system. USB input and balanced interconnects out directly to my power amplifiers.
The Aurora will be set by default to pro audio voltage levels at the analog outputs.

From the manual:
"The Aurora’s analog I/O can be used with balanced or unbalanced line level devices operating at a nominal trim level of +4dBu or –10dBV (switchable in banks of four channels)."

Your answer should be here if you have a cable problem connecting balanced to unbalanced:

Yes.  I've connected lots of stuff to it, and only had this problem with Lynx gear.  However, the Lynx may be the only XLR DAC I've tried.

Maybe.  I wired all 6 XLR to RCA combinations this morning and described it here:

It's particularly strange to me that protect triggers even if the Lynx is off.

USB.  But this same thing happened with a PCI Lynx card a few years ago.

I think I figured it out.

I guess my XLR to RCA converters just aren't right.  And when I was manually wiring to try things, I never tried hooking two XLR wires to one RCA wire which is what was needed.

Details at the end of this thread:

I'm glad you got it working.

I asked about firewre vs usb because if it was firewire I was curious if there was still noise.

Glad you got it working.  I'm saving for the Aurora 16 (8 is all I need but I like to plan for growth) and was very concerned as I also have an Emotiva amp - MPS-2.  Mine has XLR inputs so I might not have this issue, but still glad it is a working combination.
