Hi All:
     Does anyone know how the Media Center locates and plays back audio CDs music from my hard drive?
Is it  --  The artist name, CD title, file extension name,  or something else altogether?
If it's the file name I need a way to change it before copying/ripping but I can't find a way to do that.

These would be Ripped tracks.

When MC imports a file into its Library (either via Rip or a File Import), it populates a Filename field.  That is used to locate the media file.  This location is set in the base, folder, and filename rules under Tools > Options > File Location > Audio.

MC also maintains a CD database so that it knows the CDs you've inserted.  It looks up meta information about the CD, so that ripped tracks may use this meta data (i.e. tags).

The filename is constructed from the Filename rule in the mentioned File Location > Audio area.

You can use various fields to build the filename, such as:

  [Track #] [Name]

to give you the track number followed by the name.  Setting directory components as well helps build the full path:

  Base: M:\Music
  Directory Rule: [Album Artist (auto)]\[Album]
  Filename Rule: [Track #] [Name]

So your ripped tracks will be something like:

  M:\Music\Mumford & Sons\Babel\2 Whispers in the Dark.flac
