Best way/format to stream video to ipad?
« on: January 15, 2013, 01:30:29 pm »

Sorry if this seems a little newb-ish--I'm a pretty experienced MC user but I have little experience with Apple devices. We got my mom an ipad 2 and I'm trying to figure out the best way for her to watch DVDs on it.

I'm going to experiment right after I finish this post, but so far I know I have to use WebGizmo to stream to the ipad (I already have Media Network setup). I haven't ripped a DVD with MC yet, but I can't seem to find any options for DVD ripping... can I rip/encode a DVD in MC in a format that can be streamed by the ipad (without transcoding)?

If you mean streaming dvd video in it's original ifo/vob format I have no experience and cannot make a recommendation.
For streaming mp4 video you cannot beat JRemote.
For streaming all other video types I recommend Air Video.
For copying all video types to the iPad and playing locally I recommend AVPlayerHD.

I'm using AirAV and find it works well.

Rip in MC, enable the Media Network and AirAV sees the content.

Have not heard of this. It does not seem to be available in the Canadian iTunes store.

Apparently there are some name changes and two versions.  This might help:

I got it free, and it seems to be free periodically.

So it looks like it's called Ace Player, right? Just want to make sure I get the right one, as it's $2.99. Are you just ripping it normally in MC?

How does this compare to webgizmo?

WebGizmo is fine for quick, single use, but I find it a but clumsy.

It appears the software is now called Ace Player.  Mine keeps updating, and retains the name as AirAV.  It appears the author didn't understand the restrictions / requirement around AC3, so two versions were created.  The AirAV name isn't available in the AppStore, but is redirected to Ace Player.

I don't have a huge about of time on the app, so if it is not urgent, you might wait until it is free and then download.

Does stream straight from your PC or does it use MC to access the files (like webgizmo)? I would assume the former...

I might just try it, $3 isn't that much.

It uses any DLNA server.  I'm using MC for that (hence the Media Network reference in my first post).

If there's a file format you want me to quickly test, let me know.

Thanks. I'm just looking for a format that MC can easily rip and that's supported by the iPad--any suggestions?

Edit-I just streamed an mp4 using webgizmo and it worked well. Does ace player just have a better interface/organization?
