New computer build and new to JRiver (coming from iTunes)
« on: October 10, 2012, 10:40:53 am »

I'm in the process of building my C.A.P.S V2 server to try against my current Mac Mini running iTunes and Pure Music.

I do have some questions though before I attempt it.  I don't want to mess it up.   :)

Can I take my current 2TB AIFF external drive and plug it into my CAPS running JRiver and it will all import including artwork?  If not, what do I need to do?  I did see the import section here http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Import but there must be more to it.

I did see a link for "audio setup" here http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Audio_Setup but again, there must be more to it.  No?

As for uploading new Cd's.  What is the best way to accomplish this and where can I find the settings for this?

Last, I have an iPad and Mac Book Air that I'd like to use.  Would I use Remote and WebGizmo for them?  Are these the best options to not slow the system down?

Thanks!

Welcome.

I don't believe iTunes writes artwork into AIFF tags (although it should).

So you might need to run a tool like this to get your artwork ready to be used by JRiver (or any other program):

If your external drive is formatted for OSX, Windows will not recognize it without extra software. (AIFF is a file format, not a hard drive format.)  Windows recognizes NTFS and FAT32 formats for such hard drives.

A simple risk free solution might be to buy an additional 2 TB drive, format it as NTFS on the Windows PC and transfer files via a LAN connection.  Keep your existing external drive for use on the Mac.

OK.  That's easy enough then.

What about the other questions?   :)

What about the other questions?   :)

You mean these?

I did see a link for "audio setup" here http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Audio_Setup but again, there must be more to it.  No?

Yes, there is more to it, a lot of it will become obvious when you start working with it and go over the settings. Some stuff is more advanced en then some more. I suggest you go over the wiki, the settings, search the forums and then ask more direct questions as they arise.

As for uploading new Cd's.  What is the best way to accomplish this and where can I find the settings for this?

Uploading? You mean ripping and converting with MC? Please clarify.

Last, I have an iPad and Mac Book Air that I'd like to use.  Would I use Remote and WebGizmo for them?  Are these the best options to not slow the system down?

Most (if not all?) iPads can be synced with MC. The MBA could use Gizmo, yes.

What do you mean with "slow the system down"?

Computeraudiophile.com has a guide to using MC.  Did you look at that?

What about the other questions?   :)

> I did see a link for "audio setup" here http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Audio_Setup but again, there must be more to it.  No?

This page is about settings for audio output.  Start with DirectSound as the output method.  Then you can try a more audiophile output method.  Try WASAPI Event Style (checking "use exclusive access") if your DAC or soundcard relies on Windows drivers or ASIO if your device has its own ASIO driver.

Here is a guide I wrote to help someone with ripping CDs using MC:

If you have a slow internet connection, loading the pages may take awhile.

Fantastic!  I'll get it all installed and then go from there.   :)

Correction, I made a typo: iPOds, not ipads sync with MC. Check the ipods thread for info because there are models that don't sync. I think iphones and ipod touch models don't sync, check the thread.
