Identification Of Number Of Channels
« on: October 03, 2012, 10:20:53 pm »

I just imported a 7.1 DTS-MA surround setup file downloaded from the net. MC shows the number of channels as 6, where as the demo plays it clearly has 8. Is this a limit of the sound device to detect channels?

Ken

It does play all channels on the correct speakers on my HTPC.

Media Info shows this:

Channel(s)  8 channels / 6 channels

Perplexed with the dual audio channels listed for a single audio stream....

Thanks for bringing this up.

I see this too for many of my 7.1 files. MC sees them as 6 channels.
It still also sees TrueHD as Unknown Audio in the Compression Field, but during playback it correctly shows TrueHD in the Audio Stream section of the OSD.

The reason mediainfo shows 8 channels/6 channels is this:
Most likely your file is a DTS-HD MA 7.1 channel file. DTS-HD MA by default has a 'core' DTS track in case you can't decode the lossless stream. The maximum the core DTS can hold is 5.1 channels (or 6.1 if the core is DTS-ES, which I cannot remember whether it is even an option or not).
MC seems to only read the core to fill the data in the compression field. However, sometimes even the OSD gets the wrong number of channels when playing back media.

Thanks for the reply...

That jogged my memory a bit about the secondary stream... I remember from a bit ago when it was first introduced on my PS3. I will have to dig in a bit to see if I can get a proper ID from MC on the HD audio streams.
