Is it possible to add hardware volume control for those of us with DAC that support volume control on the boundary of analog/digital? (e.g. ess sabre 9018) This is a superior method of volume control, and would accommodate those of us with high end dacs as the software volume control is bypassed and does nothing.

I'm a bit confused as to what you're asking but you can disable the digital volume control in JRiver MC.
With the mouse select Player ---> Volume ---> Disabled Volume.

According to the ESS 9018 block diagram, this DAC chip doesn't support volume control at all. It is probably up to the implementation of the manufacturer that is using the ESS 9018 as to how volume control is implemented. It is also probably not able to be controlled via software.

Any DAC using the ESS 9018 DAC chip does its processing at 32 bits so volume control would also be 32 bit unless they are using a completely analog volume control. JRiver uses 64 bit volume control and would still be superior.

You are mistaken. The ESS 9018 most certainly does support volume control in 0.5dB increments - check the pdf.

In order of quality it would be internal dac (similar to es9018) > analog (assuming the s/n is better than the dac which it is in this case) > software
