The last option (I'm trying to make it sound polite  ;)). I voted for direct buffering btw, memory playback reminds me of reclocking freak.

Nev - that option is not necessary when you come over to my house and listen to a track with it and without it. :D

Play from memory in MC is a compromise put in more as a check off item rather than a major attempt to improve sound quality. I believe that Matt and Jim  do not believe that play from memory really improves sound, but put it in for people who thought they needed it. Please correct me if I am wrong on this.

MC play from memory only puts a single track into memory and if it is a compressed file it puts the compressed form (e.g. the FLAC file) in memory. Then, the decompression comes after it comes out of memory, which sort of defeats the play from memory theory of doing minimal disk and CPU activity. It reduces disk activity, but not CPU activity.

Personally, I use a system will little else running and cannot hear any difference when using play from memory in MC. If you want optimal sound quality, you should not be doing other things on the PC anyway.
