DVD |PLS| MP3 players
« on: April 16, 2002, 08:08:44 am »

Hi,
I'm looking to purchase a new DVD player for my home. It needs to have progressive scan |PLS| the ability to MP3 files CD/R|PLS|RW disks. I also use VBR recording a lot.

Anyone out there with any experience of DVD players playing VBR MP3 files?

Not much experience yet, but I'll let you know more when I get some.

I just bought a JVC DVD player last week and I'm still figuring it out.  It does have progressive scan and will play mp3 CD-R/RW discs. The constraint there is the player can handle only 150 files per folder and only 99 folders.  I had an old CDR with 1200|PLS| tracks in low bitrate in the root directory and the player only recognizes the first 150.  This one (model JVC...500...) was about $170 US at Best Buy. The $130 model (JVC...300...) did not have progressive scan.  I'll check on the VBR ability and get back to ya.

LCtheDJ - thanks for the update. I have been looking at the JVC - it seems to have good features at a reasonable price.

The restrictions on the # of files / directories are worth noting - I didn't know that. I also heard that you can't hit "random" when playing MP3 files. I guess I would really use that feature when I'm having a party at home - burn a CD full of tunes and then play them randomly. Can you confirm this?

If you can confirm it will play VBR files I will add it to my list of possible players.

Daewoo from Sam's Club at $100 plays MP3s (including VBR), VCD, SVCD on CDR and CDRW. No progressive scan at this price. Also works nice at DVDs.

Ravman - Thanks for the update. It looks like MP3 VBR may not be the problem I thought it may be.

Progressive scan is a must - I live in hope of the HDTV fairy making a visit to Che Gatobrit sometime before the end of the next millenium.

I didn't realize this was a DVD Interactive Board!!!!!
Does this mean we can discuss anything?

Dave - JimH is the final arbiter but we've discussed hardware (politics, population growth and the in's and out's of a cat's a** too) before now. I posted a question about HT receivers a while back and got a lot of good info.

The JVC I have is model XV-S500BK. The manual says it can play: DVD, SVCD, Video CD, Audio CD, MP3, JPEG; audio portion of CD-G, CD-TEXT, CD-EXTRA,  and MIX-MODE CD discs. Video can handle interlace or progressive scan.

The unit does not support packet write or ID3 tags, disc must be finalized, use ISO 9660 format, they "recommend" mp3's be 128 kbps / 44.1 kHz. Playback does not allow programmed or random play.

I have NOT tried VBR in it yet, but I know it WILL play 48 kbps / 32 kHz mono tracks.

John,

I've got a Toshiba SD500E DVD/DVD-AUDIO/VCD/SVCD/MP3 player.

It plays VBR MP3 perfectly. In fact I made a CD with files encoded
at different CBR/VBR bitrates and with different encoders (lame, Musicmatch, gogo).
Some files also included ID3v2 tags with pictures and they all played fine.

The player is convenient with its dual disc tray allowing about 20 hours of mp3
playback at a decent 160kbp average bitrate.

have a good day.

Guys - thanks for the info. I guess the best way to test this would be to cut a CD and take it along to the store.

Thanks,
John
