Portable Install on removable drive can't be updated
« on: November 21, 2012, 06:30:47 pm »

Updated (see below)
Portable Install on removable drive doesn't run, instead installs MC17 on new computer C: drive. I think it maybe trying to upgrade to the latest version. But instead it's doing a full install and then tells me my trial has expired! I have a license!

Did you have a full install previously to trying to install a portable install?

I can't remember clearly, but I think in order to install a  Portable setup, you first have to have a full registered install in place.

Yes, I have a full install. I did find now more clearly what appears to be a bug. When I start MC17 in portable mode, I get a dialogue box about updating or cancel. Of course I have been clicking on update since I know one is due. That is where it installs on C: on the new computer. If I click cancel, it opens MC17 in portable mode. However, when I try updating within MC17, it downloads, says there is an update ready, but when I try to run it,  MC17.exe can't be found. A search of the C: and portable drive can't find MC17.exe anywhere.

Auto-update doesn't work on a Portable install.

I'd recommend a regular install.

Or if you really want Portable, just disable the auto-update.

I keep a regular install of MC on all my PC's. i don't really use them for anything. I do however use my portable installs.
When i want to update my portable install i first update my regular install then do a portable installation into my existing portable install folder to update it.
Iv been doing this for a couple years with no problems.
Remember your regular install and portable install have to be the same version.
