Music01 -- Where do I get a password?
« on: April 14, 2002, 04:56:49 pm »

Hi!

I just purchased Media Jukebox Plus, and I'm very pleased. Unfortunately, when I run Music01, the music server, it says my user name and password don't match.

Where can I get a user name and password?

Thank you very much.

I'm sorry, but Music01 is now finished.  It was an experiment.

does this mean we no longer can use Music01 to share a library on our own networks?

Thanks

Private sharing will still work.

Any plans to drop that, or will it remain available for the foreseeeable future?

We'll continue to do what we think is legal.  Any advice?

Well, my interpretation of the law, would allow for me to use the music I purchase legally, for personal use however I see fit, however based on the new bill that has been initiated, and what the RIAA is trying to push in terms of copy protected CD's, that law can be interpreted multiple ways.  In my opinion, personal use is just that, however the owner sees fit, provided it does not infringe upon the artists rights.  I would vote to keep the personal use of Music01 available.

Do I need to punch hole in my firewall(home LAN w/Linksys)to allow private share?

I don't know if you have heard, but the RIAA wants to put a entertainment tax on speakers. since if you can hear the music on earphone, a speaker broadcasts the sound and that means you are using the music as a "public performance" that violates the copyright.

the good news is there is a new speaker coming out in the future (it is a bit pricy right now) that will overcome this and you must be standing directly in front of the speaker to hear it. i seen this on "Audiophile" on TechTV (ZD-TV)

Advice is what I charge money for. Anything else is pure unsubstantiated opinion.

But my guess is that you're being threatened with the royalties that the arbitration panel imposed on streamcasters. Otherwise, why shut down the sharing facility at Music01? If you restrict it to private mode, and aren't stripping files out of a purchased CD, then I think you avoid the trap that mp3 fell into with its on-line locker, and it doesn't sound like a 'broadcast' to me.

I'll pass that by someone who really knows what she's talking about, see what she thinks.

I haven't used Music01, but what I would prefer is the ability to simply share a library (and playlists and smartlists and...) over a personal network, just by pointing to a network drive.  I believe the spirit of the law would be that it is the responsibility of the end user not to break the law, not the responsibility of the software authors to block every possible misuse (and hence destroy the usability of the product).

That's my
