CDDB really necessary?
« on: April 14, 2002, 04:53:11 am »

Have you ever thought about dropping the CDDB license and to support FreeDB instead? I'm asking because normally I use a separate program to rip my CDs but yesterday I thought as a beta tester I should try the built-in ripping of MJ on a new CD. But when I invoked the CDDB query it asked me to register with CDDB. I'm absolutely not willing to do so (why should I?) therefore I finally used my other program (which uses FreeDB) again.

How about a survey to see what the MJ users prefer?

FreeDB does Not Have As Many Options, Also They Have Servers That Go Down Then The User Must Try To Find Someone Running The FreeDb Server Software. You Can Not Do A ByFile lookup. This Means If You Have An MP3 You could never look It Up Like You Can Now With MJ.

eso_,

Here are the statistics:

CDDB: over 1,500,000 albums
FreeDB: around 500,000 albums

if we switch to FreeDB, users will constantly as us: why can't your program find CD I have when MusicMatch and RealJukebox can?

And developers support is not there. I understand that open source and free is good, but in some cases commercial is better, especially when you build a commercial application.

If you use the central node freedb.freedb.org you should always be directed to an available server. I'm using FreeDB since years now and had never any problem with availability.

For me it's absolutely not acceptable to support a company like Gracenote which tries to collect user data from other companies and uses the licensing conditions to suppress competition. I even doubt if such behavior is legal at all, at least under European legislation.

Nikolay,

CDDB: over 1,500,000 albums
FreeDB: around 500,000 albums

That may be, but when I was last using CDDB (some time ago, when it was still free) for each CD I searched I often got multiple entries (2, 3, 4, or even more). So the total number of different entries will probably be less unless they edited their database in the meantime. On the other hand, in FreeDB I find mostly a single match, sometimes there's a duplicate. And the overall quality of the data (typos etc.) is also better compared to the CDDB entries I got.

Developer support can be a problem, that's true, although I myself have made the experience that the support in the open source community is often much better than from commercial companies.

Don't misunderstand me, I don't have a problem with CDDB support by MJ. I would only like to have the choice which service I am using. And I cannot understand any company or developer who ties himself to the Gracenote licensing conditions.

It still is free if you are not a developer, or sell advertizing

thats how i got to use it in my program "MP3 Tag Grabber"

if i could find another SDK\DB that supports Mp3 File LookUp I would Give It A Look See.

What I was thinking if i could use like 2 or 3 of the sdk's i could maybe have it search all three and see what it comes up with.

in a month or so i plan to set down and tinker with this again.

If anyone can point me to all the services that allow "By File LookUp" i will create a program that will search all the servers to get a match. since FreeDB is not one of them they are out of the running.

King,

Have you tried to contact the guys from FreeDB? Often open source projects are quite supportive. The data is already there, so all it needs should be an additional query command or option.

Yep, talked to the programer for the project At FreeDb

He Has A List Of Priorities, This Is Not One Of Them, He Did Say Maybe In The Future

At The Time I Talked To Him He Just Released A Server Upgrade That Seemed To Have Broke The Servers That Were Running The New Build.

He Does Not Have A Endless Budget Of Money And Time.

You are quitte right about Gracenote, but as King says the one to one mp3  get indications is great
Beside this i will say that as a service demanding money, gracenote is a poor one
You do not have really to register, just put f...s...,anything with @hotmail,it will work

I don't see what the problem is with Registering Correctly, But As zevele10 Said You Can Put Anything In There And It Will Work.
