Windows 7 or Windows 8?
« on: December 15, 2012, 05:33:25 am »

Does JRMC18 sound better on Windows 8 or are there no advantages to be gained over Windows 7?

If I did transfer to Windows 8, I would do a fresh install. How could I save all of my data so that I wouldn't have to retag files or attach cover art again?

Thanks

If your current installation uses standard pathes for cover art an easy way could be to backup the entire contents from > \Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\J River\..., do your Win8 install and then restore the JRiver folders into your new user folder.

BTW: I'm happy being back @7 after a couple of weeks in 8land.  8)
BTW2: Should you go for Win8, it's usually not a bad idea to save the entire User folders of your previous Windows installation anyway. ;)

I have seen a couple of comments that audio sounds better under 8 than 7, but not enough to be a definiitive sense (or any reasons why it would be so).

That's a different issue from whether JRiver MC would even be affected by the change in a positive way.

FYI, I was unable to get bitstreaming HD audio (for bluray rips) to play with MC on Win8, so went back to windows 7.

The drivers I use for my E-Mu 0204 DAC are exactly the same in Win 8 as they were in Win 8. I know because I have to go through a ton of crap to load them.

That being said, I notice absolutely no difference in sound quality of 8 over 7.

In fact, as I use the USB DAC mentioned above, I noticed I actually have to connect it directly to my laptop, otherwise it will skip and flutter like crazy when using my USB docking station. Never had this problem in Win 7.

I actually like the faster boot time and wake from sleep on Win 8, so I'm staying here. Since the upgrade only cost me $40, I wouldn't feel too bad if I did decide to revert to 7 though.
