M4A Lossless Crashes MC On Import
« on: July 25, 2013, 08:20:27 pm »

Recently, I started having trouble importing M4A lossless audio.  MC will crash on the attempt.  This start with MC 17, but since I have done a clean Windows install on the same machine, in installed MC 18 and it seems to be doing the same thing.

Here is the log, system info, and an example file that causes it to crash.  Please let me know as soon as you've grabbed the file, as I need to remove the share.  Thanks.

 8) Think I found IT !!   8)

If you look at the file properties through windows (click right) go to the "ID-Tag" Tab and you will see the Media Type is marked "Movie" ==> change this to "Audio" and play from windows to jriver

Select the song which now playing. Then make sure the tag was written to the file and library by opening the tag window in jriver, if =>Media Type=Audio from the windows tab. Then it will work and you can add it permanently to the library

My new girlfriend is prancing around to your 130BPM mix -- looks like the afternoon will be a pleasant one, guess I should thank you  ;D

I do not have an "ID-Tag" tab in Windows file properties.  That must be something you have installed.  I have reviewed all the tags through MP3Tag and there is nothing that looks like that either.  I cannot edit this in MC as well since it crashes on import.

And it's not my mix... it's from a promo DJ service and is watermarked with my account information, so please don't share.  That's why I need to delete the share as soon as someone from JR has a chance to look into it.

Looking at MediaInfo, I see:

?? In Windows, when you right click and choose properties you don't see something like this?? Don't need the MediaInfo download

Movie is definately in the metadata, as you can see. I think MC is getting confused ... as I said it plays through jriver once this "tag" is changed.

:-[ ooops  :P never realized, sorry about that, thanks for the info. So how can he change externally this field then ... sure thats what the issue is because it will then play in jriver and I can change the tag once it is imported. I have tried with Mp3 Tag and Tag&Rename to no avail. Too bad was so simple for me ....

maybe convert to flac and see if that will play - clear tags, then retag - then reconvert if needed?

I have figured out the cause of the crash.  The fix will appear in the next build when it comes out.

We mishandled the ISO-defined copyright data in mp4 files.

hmm .... then why when I changed the media type, it could be imported and played normally?

It does not always crash, maybe because Windows OS has become more crash resistant.  Some times the program does not crash at the first offense of the bad code, only to crash at a later time (actually causes it to be more difficult for us developers to figure out the cause).

In any case, once imported, the file will play just fine.  Also MC will correctly put the file under Audio during import.
