Import changing Artist field to CUE file Performer (Bug ?)
« on: January 21, 2013, 07:40:36 pm »

I did some searching, read up on "Carnac" and I think there is some sort of bug.

I imported a bunch of albums, and some individual files with existing tags, ended up with their database fields for "artist" and "album" changed to something different than the tags.

I checked the raw "Vorbis Comment" data and in each case, there is complete existing tag information.

In each case, the track number and genre are successfully imported.

In each case, the folder name is used as the album, and the parent folder name is used as the artist.  In actuality, if I actually used that scheme, I might not have found the problem (and the fact that it is not previously reported might be due to it being a popular scheme).

However, my folder names are "Artist - Album" and the parent folder is "_Genre", so I immediately noticed that some tracks had "_Jazz" and "_Classical" as their artists. ;)

Hmm... I think that the track is the last track in the album in each case...

UPDATE: see later in thread...

I don't recall that Carnac is applied to Audio files.  I imported 10 flacs from an album in the folder structure Artist\Album.  The Artist, Album, Date, nor Genre were missing both prior to import and after MC imported them.

Do you have some auto-import rules being applied?  If so, what are they?

If by "rules" you mean "Apply These Tags (optional)", then no, nothing is entered there.

In "Tasks" everything is unchecked/off.

(Allow Automatic CD lookup/submission is off.)

Build is 112.

If you're able to give a set of steps to reproduce the problem, maybe someone here can try it as well.

(Update - see the post following this post in order to reproduce bug)

Here is what I've done over the past weeks (but I think I have previously seen tracks with the Artist changed to a folder name, so none of the following may be related):

- Import a folder containing a whole genre

- Delete everything in the Library

- Setup Auto Import to a folder on my external drive, but no background import.

- Manually move a bunches of albums to that folder and a couple of levels of child folders

- Manually "Auto Import".

Again, it looks like this only occurs with the last track of an album.

It's related to CUE files included in the folder.

It is actually changing the Artist in the last track to the "Performer" in the CUE file.

I previously used a CUE sheet generator program that DID use the folder name as the "Title" and the parent folder as the "Performer".  (This was for another music player program that required CUE files in order to play multiple files.)

When there is no CUE file in the folder, everything imports fine.

I happened to have one album which has changed folder structure since the CUE file was generated, and the Artist for the last track was changed to the "Performer" in the CUE file, not the current parent folder name.

So, data from the CUE file is getting mixed up with the MC database, overwriting the information from the Vorbis Comment tags.

PS  I tested removing an album with this problem from the MC18 Library, deleting the CUE file, and then importing the folder again, and - no problem.

So, it seems clear that the presence of a CUE file causing an Import bug.

Hmm - this problem only occurs with CUE files made by one particular program.

The CUE files look fine, but I am not an expert on CUE file syntax.

And there is still the question of why it used the CUE file information ONLY for the last track.

(Locking the topic since it may not be an MC18 bug.)
