I have been having a recurring problem that MC18 crashes after playing audio files. When I restart MC18 album artists that were grouped under (multiple artists) are now under individual artists and if I try to play a file nothing happens. When I hover over a file it gives <unknown name> and no location. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software, restoring to an older library and nothing works for more than a day or two. I have added the last two crash logs to this post but since they were larger than 700kb I added links to the files in my dropbox. I really am lost on this and have never seen this before. Any help would be greatly appreciated and probably keep me from using my htpc as a shot put. Thanks

I have not checked the logs (i;ll leave that to someone who can make sense of it ) but sounds like you may have a flaky harddisk.

Can you check the source, check SMART counters of the drive, try copying files manually and play them with another application?

What happens if you find a file manually and double click it?

If I clicked on the file in MC18 it would not play but the play count would change and last played date would change. I can play the same file through vlc player no problem.

Sounds like it could be a Library problem (the database).

Anybody from J River get a chance to look at those logs?

Meanwhile, try creating a new library and reimporting some files. You can backup your current library to make sure you're not loosing it in the process.

If it only crashes when you play audio, you might work through this Audio Setup guide:

Yep.  That was going to be my guess.

If not that (ie, if even DirectShow mode doesn't work), then check:

1. For disk corruption/errors/failure, particularly the disk where the Library files are stored.
2. Drivers, particularly SATA/platform and soundcard.

It could also, possibly, be a misbehaving anti-virus application.

I just updated to the newest version, turned off auto import and will try with a smaller group of files. I ran smart tests on the drives and everything seems healthy on that end. It's set as WASAPI going HDMI to my Onkyo receiver. I'll keep close tabs on it and see how it goes the next few days. Thanks for the help guys.

Still Crashing.... the last time it crashed even before I played a song. I put a link to the crash report. I'm kinda screwed right now..was having people over and I like displaying MC18 on the big screen in the living room. I have Gizmo for android on my phone and JRemote for the ipad to control it if that helps.

I find that Wasapi Event Style works very well between my HTPCs and Onkyo receivers via HDMI. Did you try that with 10, 25 or 100 ms buffers?
