If this question has the most obvious answer of any question ever posted on this site, I do apologize.

But I'll take the risk just the same.

How can I use JRiver to tell me how many albums I have?

The simplest answer is to go to the Audio > Panes view and look at the album count listed in the Album column.

Beat me by seconds.

So, I will add "unique content" (ooh).

What the above shows is "the number of unique Album tags amongst all your files".

So, two caveats:

* If you have three CDs that are all tagged with the Album tag "Dark Side of the Moon", the 3 CDs will be counted as one. (I think that is a good thing, but it means the count is the number of "albums" not "CDs".)

* If you have files without any Album tag at all, they will all show up under "Unassigned" at the bottom of the list of albums in the Album pane. That could be many albums, so the count is only accurate after you have tagged everything in your Library.

In Windows, go to Start->Programs->Accessories->Windows Explorer and start it.

Find the top folder for all your music (something like F:\Music perhaps). Right-click and select Properties.

When it finishes counting, then the number of folders is your number of CDs - assuming that you put one CD per folder.

The physical CDs are stored in a separate database, called, CD.

So you need to create a view or playlist that asks for values only from that database. I've attached a screenshot that shows the basic requirements (highlighted in yellow). You can ignore (i.e. not configure) the other items (I just used one of my existing views for the screenshot).

Since your CDs will have a unique Volume Name, the count will be accurate for the number of discs MC has seen. Add an Album column if you want multi-disc CDs to show up as a single entry (and hence a smaller, actual titles count).

I made a smarlist to get all cd with at least 1 song: and since all my cd have the [Disc #] filled up I get the number of "equivalent physical" CD:
[Media Type]=[Audio] [Track #]=1 ~sort=[Album Artist],[Album],[Disc #]
If I want the number of Albums, I just add a [Disc #]=1 before the ~sort

When I open the smartlist I get the number of CD along with the total size and duration on the bottom of the window.
Not sure if this is the best way to do, but as an expression beginner, I am happy!

It doesn't matter - Windows will count all the sub-folders as well. The number of folders listed in Properties is the number of all folders below that folder.

In my case I think it would matter.

My folders are labelled as artist and then the subfolders are the actual albums.

So if I'm counting all of my folders, the artist folders would be also counted as albums which would leave me with an inflated number.

I like one-stop shopping

This offers the album counts, as well as...

This allows me to find the whereabouts of any photo or music, be it on removable drive, CD or local file.

If I lend a CD out, I add the borrower to the people branch of my keywords field so I know who to go to when I remember someone borrowed it 14 months down the line

Of course, if you don't do nested keywords, the [People] field would work just as well.

Create a new view under Audio. If you don't know much about this, here's marco's very good overview:

Set your rules for file display to that shown in the attached screenshot. Take care to ensure the parenthesis are added (hover where the parenthesis should be, and click).

The Reference ID columns shown in my screenshot won't be of use to you unless you've tagged your CDs with an ID, so we'll skip that portion.

The Artst, Album and Volume Name columns are just stock MC fields you add as columns.

The Location column is an expression column:

   IfElse(isequal([file type], ifo, 1), DVD,
   isequal([file type], bdmv, 1), Blu-ray,
   isequal([file type], cda, 1), CD,
   isequal([Removable], 1), CD,
   1, [Volume Name])

You might also consider adding a Name column. Marco also has Media Type, Keywords, File Type, and Date (year) columns.

His second Artists column is an expression column:

   Left([Artist], 2)

It is also possible to combine both Artists column into a hierarchical tree view (A > Aa, A > Ab, etc.). Ask if you'd prefer this.

Many thanks MrC, that will certainly get me started on the right track. I have been attempting with some success with Smartlists but this is a step above (probably several) what I have been attempting. Simply trying to understand the potential of what is possible in this program is quite a challenge, to me at least.
