Library Import Issues for My Music Files
« on: February 25, 2013, 11:27:42 am »

All, just installed MC 18 and immediately faced serious problem with importing my existing music media library. All my music files are stored on external drive, and they are properly tagged and organized. In the Tool > Import I have set a source folder for my external drive, which is E (and it has always been E), and when MC imported everything I realized that all my imported music is tagged as if it came from the drive D. When in library view filenames of my music files start with D:\. I do not have D at all in my system, and surely when clicking on any of these files I get error message that the file couldn't be found.

Moreover, for some albums I found that MC imported both E and D 'versions'. The D versions are properly tagged, but cannot be played (file not found as above), but the E version can be played back with no problem, but the album names are missing. I am confused and seeking help. I never realized that MC could be so prone to such issues, as I never had anything like this with my other players (Foobar, etc).

Please suggest solution or recommendations to my matter, I very much appreciate any help I can get.

Have you ever had MC installed previously, and did you ever have files on a D drive that it might have imported?

I recall I had MC 17 trial version installed several months ago, but then I did not proceed with purchase. I do not recall I ever had a D drive. I run dedicated music PC and the only drives I have are C and E as external drive.

So probably what happened was your MC18 upgraded the MC17 library, which did reference D: files.  No matter...

Use the Search box to type:

[Filename]=[D:\"

and this will list all the files on D.  Select these files, and hit the Delete key to soft delete them from MC's database.  This should leave you with just the E: files.

MrC, thank you, your recommendation did solve the issue of removing the  non-existent D drive files. I still hovewer have an issue with my library - after deleting all the D files I ended up with incomplete library, i.e. only with those files that were initially imported as E drive files. I am trying to force auto import, but nothing happens. Is there a solution to this and how can I now import the rest of my files? Again, thanks for prior suggestions.

Create a smartlist and enter via the Import/Export button you'll see:

   ~d=r

and OK you way out.  Select all the files presented there and hit Delete.

Then run your auto-import.

Ok, did that, reimported everything just to realize that MC imported about 500 of my albums (70% of my total library) without tags. Is it possible? I have my whole library properly tagged and I did spent so much time organizing it thoroughly! I guess i need to think twice if I want to continue with MC...

Don't fret, so long as the files have the tags, you're in good shape.

A couple of users have noticed some problems with importing and tags in the recent builds.  It has been noted in the beta forum, and is probably being looked at.  I'll post this thread so that it might get some more attention.

Hang tight...

I guess I am not the only one with such an issue. Just for reference, and if this helps in delivering the message to the developers, some of the albums were imported with 'unassigned' album names, some did not have cover art, while some have lost tags pretty much completely, including the artist names. As noted in my prior post, about 30% of the albums were transferred without any tagging issues at all.

Somebody suggested .129, but this wasn't certain.

If you have a file where we're not reading tags properly, please mail a sample to logs at jriver dot com.

Thank you.

appears only to be a problem with a fresh installation

reinstalled .129 & tag info all there
then installed .136 and no problem at this stage

I haven't been able to reproduce this.

What types of files are you testing?  Any other clues?
