Unable to restore MC18, is MJ8 the problem?
« on: February 17, 2013, 07:20:17 am »

Hi.

I am unable to restore MC18, is MJ8 the problem?

I have just purchased an upgrade, received both the key and the *.mjr-file. But MC18 is unable to restore the licence, neither file nor Internet restore works. The error message says "Unknown error".

During the trial period i was running both MC18 and the older MJ8 simultaneously without problems. Is this a problem when it comes to licence handling? I am reluctant to uninstall MJ8 since I sometimes have a need for a lightweight but highly performing player.

Thanks for the purchase.

Please close MJ and MC, download and reinstall the latest MC18 from the top of this board, then reboot.  Then restore your license, using a browser other than Opera.

Does that work?

Thanks for the quick reply.

But - no, still not working.

I have made uninstalls of both MJ8 and MC18, deleted all registry entries containing MC18, JRiver, MediaJukebox, mcsp, MC14, MJ12, deleted all files and directories in the same manner, made a cold restart, reloaded and re-restored. But it won't work.

After that I re-installed MJ8 and restored it's license. Works like a charm.

My gut feeling is that this is a registry related problem. Do you have a truly complete uninstaller?

Just an update from my side: I have five computers running MJ8, for three of them the upgrade and restore to MC18 worked fine, two didn't work at all.

My belief is that the basic problem is the incomplete uninstall. The more specific problem seems to be that on the malfunctioning PC:s I historically have evaluated also MJ12, MC14 and finally MC18. All evaluations have worked, it is only the license restore that now fails.

Thanks Jim, but I don't quite follow you.

I used the same e-mailed restoration file for all PC:s, so I don't think that it is anything wrong with the license file.

Those are the best instructions.  Please read them carefully.

It's unlikely to be a conflict with MJ8.  Though I haven't tested with anything that old recently, you can easily have multiple versions of MC (and MJ) installed on the same machine.  My machine at home had (until recently) copies of MC16, 17, and 18 all installed, licensed, and working simultaneously (along with a copy of MJ 1.x for kicks).

Something else is going on.

Is there anything weird with those machines where it didn't work?  The clock does need to be accurate for the install to work.  It also depends on Windows reporting certain "activation characteristics" I believe (hardware specs and whatnot, much like Windows activation).  If, by chance, they're on cracked versions of Windows, that could be part of the problem.

Thanks glynor.

I can confirm that MJ8 and MC18 works in parallel, I have three machines that does that.

The clock may be a path for me to check, I have a slowly degrading CPU-battery on one of the failing machines. But time is always accurate when operating since I sync the watch at startup.

These are not on cracked XP, however original OEM-factory installation is quite old. (Indeed  - MJ8 from 2002 or something).

That compatibility began after MJ8.  With MC11, I believe.

Make sure you have MC18 installed and that it runs.
