I decided to let media center import my whole itunes library.
There were 24 tracks it could not import. all m4a (alac). The strange thing is it imported parts of the album, but left a few songs out of a few albums. I can't see anything wrong with the files. I can play them in the finder and itunes. I don't see any strange characters.
I deleted one of the songs from itunes, and itunes had no problem reimporting it.
Also many songs got imported with ratings. I'm not sure where the ratings came from. Presumably not from itunes (the ratings were different than what I had them rated in itunes)
There will be a learning curve if I decide to adopt MC as my player . . .
