Can anybody play AIFF files?
« on: April 14, 2013, 11:51:50 am »

I have version 168 and cannot stream AIFF files (which are all of my CD burns....)  Cannot steam M4a Files.  I can stream FLAC and MP3 (some.....well, only the ones downloaded from Itunes.....).  Maddening.... Anyone experiencing the same??  I guess the good news is my "HIREZ" files will play but that's about it.

Select "Always Convert" to "Uncompressed - 24 bit".  You'll get the full quality of the original at the original sample rate and all of your formats (aif, m4a, mp3, flac, etc.) should play fine to the DAC.  Even though the selection is called "Always Convert", it's actually just repackaging the original bits in a way the DAC can understand - there is no loss of quality at all.

Can you point me in the right direction to "always convert" functions?  I am really lost in this program right now- I cannot remember how i even fixed my distortion problem.

 Sorry and thank you.

No problem - we're working on simplifying this setup process for obvious reasons :)

Go to Tools/Options/Media Network/Add or Configure DLNA servers...
You probably have just one DLNA server in the top list (Generic DLNA), so leave that selected, then set Audio -> Conversion to "Always Convert" and set Encoder to "Uncompressed - 24 bit".

Aren't you then always upsampling if you use those settings?

No.  The sample rate is not changed, and the data stays bit-perfect.

There's a common misunderstanding about audio bitdepth in this regard (not samplerate).  Adding more bits is like showing a number as "10.0" instead of "10".  They're still the same number.  More details here:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Audio_Bitdepth

We've tried to make this more clear in a coming build of the program.

Ok, thanks!  However, I don't think I have the same menu options.  Photo attached.

I can play all files but get nothing but terrible distortion after about 2-3 minutes.  What gives?

Should I be running "core" audio? I'm set to null it's the only thing I can think of.

Me too, I can play FLAC and AIFF,  so is Encoder PCM 24 bit what we want ?
