I will be away from home for several months and would like to play back movies stored on my home server on a laptop I will be taking with me.

What's the best way to accomplish this?

I'm thinking either via Webgizmo or Mediaserver (library server).

I think I would prefer to use Mediaserver, since that would be the best quality.  But, when I use library server within my own network (100 Mbps), my Network Utilization is at 99%.  Surely it would be even worse if I was outside my network, no?  Would upgrading to a gigabit network help?

Wait a second...I just noticed that after several minutes of play back from library server, my Network Utilization dropped to basically 0%. 

Was it just buffering the whole movie?

It probably buffered as much as it could grab.
You could use either webremote or another MC as a client however if you use another MC as a client you have more control over the bandwidth used since you can pick the conversion format and size.
