Seeing Blue Screen of Death During Library Analysis
« on: April 03, 2013, 02:20:29 am »

An analysis was running against my media library when I saw a blue screen on my desktop.  The following message appears in the system log of the event viewer:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x1000007e (0xffffffffc0000096, 0xfffff80003884b24, 0xfffff8800e35ca18, 0xfffff8800e35c270). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\Minidump\040313-8814-01.dmp. Report Id: 040313-8814-01.

Prior to that event, I see this:

The previous system shutdown at 11:50:00 PM on ‎4/‎2/‎2013 was unexpected.

In the application log, I see this event at 8:48PM on 4/2/2013:

This is most likely caused by an outdated firmware, drivers or missing patches on your system. Less likely (but not impossible) would be an instable system due to an overclock, incorrect memory config or bad memory.

What OS version are you running and is it fully updated?

You can find more info about 0x7e on the microsoft knowledgebase and here for instance.

If you still have your minidump file (C:\Windows\Minidump, look at the date of the file) you can upload it at the obove site to make an online analysis. This might give more insight into which driver or component is misbehaving. If you wish, you can paste the analysis result here (use the [ code ] [ /code ] tags (without spaces) around the analysis info, I or someone else can try and help.

I am running Windows 7 Professional, and it has all the latest updates.  I had updated recently, and just rechecked to find no needed updates (other than Bing Desktop that I refuse to install).

I looked for the minidump file stated in the logs, but it looks like Disk Cleanup removed it.  I rebooted, ran a chkdsk /f on all local drives, ran a check disk on my NAS (where my audio files are stored), and I am continuing the music analysis now.  It is further along than it was when my system crashed, so it may finish.  If I get a BSOD again, I will be sure that the dump file is saved.

My drivers are up to date other than my video drivers.  NVIDIA releases them too fast for me to keep up, but I will check for updates for them if this happens again.  I have not seen a BSOD on this system before...

Some additional information that may be helpful--

The majority of my audio files were missing images from MC.  I could not figure out how to add the images that exists as a single Folger.jpg file for all folders.  I had the option set to look for a Folder.jpg file, and I unchecked the option to save the image in the files' tags.  To resolve this, I removed all files from my library to re-import them all again.  MC locked up when deleting all audio files from the library.  I allowed the application to continue running, and it became responsive eventually.  After re-importing, my images were visible for all albums.

I am not sure if this sequence of events had anything to do with the BSOD.

Are you still experiencing BSODs after the updates you mentioned above, or was this a one-off?

Thanks.

My music analysis finished on the second try.  I have no idea what caused it to happen.

I purchased a license yesterday.  Everything is working fine now.

I had a bad experience with my previous trial in that MC wrote all kinds of info to my tags on my library.  This time around, I turned off every option I could find that writes anything to tags.  MC has not been writing to tag files, so everything is perfect during this trial.

Thank you to everyone for your support!

Thanks for the purchase.

Just a little note that auto-import will never do tag writing in MC18, unless you explicitly enable the option.

In MC17, it could write tags if it got cover art for a file with no artwork.  But we changed this in MC18 to be more conservative by default.
