What is 'Filter in both directions'

I wonder how 'Filter in both directions' in Customize View works.

It works on the panes. Without the option you filter from left to right, so the panes will filter the results to the right of the collumn you make your selection in and the panes to the left are left alone.

If you enable filter in both ways, the panes to the left will also filter for the selection you've made.
