MC 18 and Sonos - gapless issue
« on: March 29, 2013, 09:54:29 am »

Hi,

due to Sonos limitations and my evergrowing Music library I decided to use MC 18's new funcionality to stream Music from MC directly to my different Sonos devices.

Everything is working fine except gapless play of live concerts. Taking as an example Pink Floyds Dark Side Of The Moon, it plays on Sonos (no MC involvement) gaplessly the whole set of songs. Streaming from MC to the Sonos device the same set of songs, I do not have a gapless play.

Any thoughts what setting might be wrong or missing?

All songs are FLAC Format ripped with either EAC or MC 18 directly
All songs are stored on a server running Windows 8
the network is a GBit lan (not wireless)

Gapless works when playing
MC18 -> Lindemann USB DCC -> Naim Superunity
PC Server -> Sonos Connect - Naim Superunity

Gapless does not work when playing
MC 18 - Sonos Connect - Naim Superunity

My Settings:
Switch Track crossfade smooth or gapless (tried both)
Use gapless for sequential Album tracks selected

Alternate mode not selected

To me it Looks, the issue is when Streaming from MC to a device. Any thoughts which could help? Thanks in advance.

Maybe someone else got a gapless issue while streaming to a network player? If not, some of my settings must be wrong? Any idea where to look?

I’m afraid I can’t help you as I don’t own a Sonos Connect

1 MC18 -> Lindemann USB DCC -> Naim Superunity
2 PC Server -> Sonos Connect - Naim Superunity

These two I do understand:
1 you use a USB to SPDIF converter and MC18 does support gapless playback
2 Sonos pulls the audio from a share using file sharing, Sonos supports gapless playback

3 MC 18 - Sonos Connect - Naim Superunity
This one is a bit unclear to me. If MC18 sees the Sonos as a UPnP or DLNA device, gapless is an issues as not supported by the UPnP/DLNA sstandard.
But does Sonos support DLNA?

Hi Vincent,

I think you answered my question. I was not aware that the UPnP/DNLA standard does not support gapless.

I am not sure if Sonos supports DNLA nativ. Until very recent (either with a new build of MC18 or an update on Sonus) all Sonos devices where not visible in MC18 at all. Now they are and I can stream to any Sonos device, but unfortunately not gapless.

But if gapless is not supported by the standard, it is not much I can do. Thanks.

Found it, Sonos supports UPnP
http://www.sonos.com/support/onlineuserguide/en/SonosUserGuide/DCR/Chap07_new/Music_from_UPnP_servers_-_Controller_for_Mac_or_PC.htm

Looks like you are using the Sonos as a "Play to" device in JRiver (zone)
Maybe doing the reverse, using the Sonos to pull the audio from a UPnP server (see Displaying music servers on Sonos in the link above) makes a difference.

Have look here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=79603.0

Hi Vincent,

Pulling music from JRiver is not supported by the SONOS controller. Microsoft MC is visibe, JRiver MC is not.

Since the gapless issue is limited to live concerts and classical music, I need to figure out alternatives. Maybe splitting the library for live stuff controlled via Sonos directly and studio music via JRiver.

Thanks for your help.
