If I had to guess, this is probably related to the automatic bit-depth changes they made.

Up till .0183 used Wasapi Event Style no problem, worked great with my Young Dac.
Getting "unable to play" error message now, no matter what options in Wasapi option I tick.

Not sure if its relevant for troubleshooting, but if I set the new Automatic Bitrate setting to 32bit Integer (which always worked with the 32 bit Young) the error message says "Cannot play ...16Bit", which is the files native bitrate.
Almost like the manual setting to change to 23bit doesn't stick?

Back to Kernel Streaming for now, which is a shame as Wasapi brought out the best in the Dac.

Wondered if its the M2Tech driver which is incompatible with the new wasapi system?

thanks.

By eliminating 'Wasapi' you have prevented me from using USB with my DAC (Schiit Bifrost).  My driver requires 'Wasapi' not 'Wasapi Event'.  Why was this change needed?

Noticed the check box to prevent 'Event Style' for Wasapi.  However, even though it will play back there are all sorts of audio artifacts that were never there before and completely eliminate using USB.

Increased the buffer size to '250 milliseconds' and that eliminated all of the audio artifacts.  All seems well now.....

As I understand it, the "disable event style" option is the old WASAPI output - they just combined the options to help prevent confusion for new users.

Do you have "Open device for exclusive access" enabled? If you don't, then you can only use WASAPI at whichever settings are currently set for the sound device in the Windows Control Panel.
You tried setting 32-bit manually, does manually setting it to anything else work?

I'm still having trouble with WASAPI and video playback (audio playback works fine).  When I try to play a video file from within Media Center (mkv in my case), the program hangs, and then I have to make it fail to then restart it (likewise, with physical DVDs).  Video playback does work with Direct Sound and ASIO.  I know it's something with the update + my configuration, but I can't seem to get anything with regard to WASAPI to work (and it worked fine till the update yesterday--build 183 I think, though 184 doesn't work either).  I attached my logs from the last fail.  Any suggestions?

I experience the same issue after updating.

Event still doesn't work for me on my Schiit Bifrost.. But I use ASIO anyway as per JRiver's recommendation.

Event style never worked with my 'New' Bifrost using the current [2nd generation] drivers for Windows.  Only 'Wasapi' worked.  If you use ASIO then you must be using [ASIO4ALL]..... am I correct?  If not could you please tell me how you are using your current ASIO?

The reference to 'Older Hardware' in the initial post is really not completely accurate.  My hardware is new but is dependent on a poorly written driver from Cmedia.  Its really a shame since it eliminates using programs such as jPlay.  Even ASIO4ALL will not allow the use of jPlay..... at least I haven't been able to get it to work.

I am not using ASIO4ALL, just selected ASIO output in JRiver config options. I have a first gen Bifrost and am using drivers I downloaded from Schiit.com about 3 weeks ago.

WASAPI is now working for me but I can't resample. I get the error:

"The mixing format of your hardware does not support the current output format. Please use the "Output Format" tool in DSP Studio to convert to the mixing format listed below:
Sample Rate: 441000 Hz
Channels: 6
Bits per sample: 32"

and then:

"Something went wrong with playback.

Details:
Playback could not be started on the output 'WASAPI' using the '96kHz 16bit 2ch'.
This output format may not be supported by your hardware. You can use DSP Studio to change the output to a compatible format.

Also, make sure that your system has a valid sound playback device and that it is properly configured in playback options."

This is on a Mac Mini running Windows 7 HDMI output.

To use resampling, you must have exclusive mode enabled.

Ahhh.... then you are using Win 7.  I am using Win 8 and the first generation drivers do not work in that environment.  The Schiit Bifrost is not my only Dac but, for the price, it is truly impressive - just a victim of a poorly written USB driver which does not support anything other than 'Wasapi' under Win8.

If I want ASIO then I must use ASIO4ALL.  Not a big deal but I really don't think there is any advantage over using the current generation USB driver.  I also have access to S/PDIF Coax which works well.

Thanks. I think that fixed it. I'm not at home to see if my receiver as actually getting 24/96 but playback is working now. Also had to disable event style which I didn't before.

This is what i'm getting while playing a video file using the New WASAPI option (it doesn't matter if event style or the old way, or the type of the audio track's format)

Code: [Select]
0069748: 824: Playback: CWASAPIPlugin::Open: Start
0069748: 824: Playback: CWASAPIPlugin::Open: Device: Roccat Kave (Creative SB X-Fi); Exclusive: 0; Event style: 1
0069748: 7704: Playback: CWASAPIPlugin::Thread: Start
0069748: 7704: Playback: CWASAPIPlugin::Thread: Starting WASAPI
0069748: 7704: Playback: CWASAPIPlugin::StartWASAPI: Start
0069748: 7704: Playback: CWASAPIPlugin::StartWASAPI: Output format not supported by mixing format (hr: 0x1)
0069748: 7704: Playback: CWASAPIPlugin::StartWASAPI: Failed (caught handled exception)
0069748: 7704: Playback: CWASAPIPlugin::StartWASAPI: Releasing interfaces
0069748: 7704: Playback: CWASAPIPlugin::StartWASAPI: Finish (0 ms)
0069748: 7704: Playback: CWASAPIPlugin::Thread: Failed to start WASAPI
0069748: 7704: Playback: CWASAPIPlugin::Thread: Finish (0 ms)

Music plays back fine, but when i try to play some videos, MC just hangs without any error. i'm attaching the logs below. I can only get the videos to play through ASIO or Directsound. I' was using WASAPI Event style prior to the update.

I am sorry for my lack of knowledge but how do I get Asio to work with an Nvidia card? Do I have to download something I am on Win 7 and have always used Wasapi.

I have enabled the disable event style, some things play with no sound others, like mkv have sound but it is not right it is stuttering and the video is freezing up

I don't think Nvidia offer an ASIO driver. WASAPI should work just fine though - I use WASAPI Event without any problems. (though I don't know if older cards like yours are any different)

On my other DAC I have yet to EVER hear a difference between using Jplay and not using Jplay.  You are the first 'authoritative' person to confirm what I have been unable to hear.  Lots of hype in the audio world..... money to be made..... keep up the great work with JRiver!

Erik

Erikl that's interesting...
I checked the M2Tec site and see that the Young and the Evo use different drivers for windows.
Maybe that accounts for one working and one not?

Be good if any other Young Dac owners could pitch in, big draw of my dac was its async ability, which I think I need Wasapi for.

In my own case, I have tried all new the Wasapi options and it doesn't work with the Young Dac.

The first thing I would do is make sure that "Open device for exclusive access" is enabled. (I wonder if this was disabled by default for people that were using WASAPI instead of WASAPI Event before this change)
If you have multiple sound devices in your system, check that the right one is selected, rather than "(Default)"

If it still isn't working, try manually setting the bit-depth to 16-bit.
If that isn't working, then try disabling Event Style WASAPI.

The WASAPI problems should be fixed in build 187, so I'm closing this thread.  Please make sure you have 18.0.187 or above and then use this thread:
