Feature Request Please: Play Start Volume
« on: May 28, 2013, 08:49:25 pm »

I'd like it work like the Startup Volume but instead be applied every time you start playing something.
This would allow one to get over loud dynamically compressed music killing one's ears (and speakers) after playing a quiet movie for example.
Typically I play a movie at 90-100% volume and music at 40-65% volume.
So for me personally a Play Start Volume of 40% would probably be about right.

I recommend you use a separate zone for music and movies and then use ZoneSwitch to automatically send music/movies to the correct zone. You can have each setup for a different volume. It only takes a couple minutes to setup.

If you use Volume Protection, then your zone(s) will reset to 20% volume after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Thanks for the tips but it doesn't quite fulfil my needs.

If I play some "quiet" music and then some "loud" music I'm going to get blasting through the speakers.
If I play a "quiet" movie and then a "loud" one I'm going to get blasting through the speakers.

Using the Volume Leveling in DSP Studio will take care of the issue for music and using Tools > Options > Video > Adaptive Volume > Light should take care of the issue for Video.

Using a Play Start Volume would mean you would need to stop and start your player before every song. Also, if Play Start Volume is always set to the same level how does that help anything? Volume Leveling and Adaptive Volume take care of the levels automatically in an elegant and unobtrusive fashion.

I don't want to use the option you've recommended, I've tried it before and don't like the effect

I would not have to stop and start my player before every song.
I simply want the program to start playing at a specific volume everytime I start playing, not just at startup which can be set in the options now.

Sorry, but the exact option you are looking for is not currently possible.

Volume Protection is the closest match.

Just out of curiosity, what is it you don't like about the effect of volume leveling and replaygain?  I've never noticed any effect other than reduction in volume, but maybe I'm missing something?
