whats new in version 8
« on: March 25, 2002, 04:12:26 am »

Hi there,
I followed some discussions about the betas ov version 8 and I was trying to figure out what will be new in that version but I wasn't able to find any information.
Well I am VERY happy with V7.2 and I am wondering what could make me wanna have V8...
so could somebody please help me out with some info about what I can expect (features, improvements, etc)?

Thanks!

difool - I'm sure someone will fill this out more completely. However, I've been a MJ user for a few years and the new features I like are...

*  Reply Gain - it's a DSP that keeps the relative volume of tracks about the same. So no more constantly reaching for the volume.

*  Faster ripping. The standard MP3 encoder is LAME and it now supports on-the-fly ripping / encoding. MP|PLS| is also supported in the same way now I believe.

*  Smart lists are now much smarter and easier to use - filtering etc.

*  CD burning is much easier than before including data CD's.

Does v7 have crossfade? I forget. MJv8 does.
It also has several new way to add a track to Playing Now.  Besides adding to the end of the list you can add directly to after the currently playing track, among other options.

So if I have a playlist that's less than ~650MB of data I can burn it to CD directly from MJ?

That would be very handy as I recently purchased a Rio Volt MP3/CD player.

From MJ v8.0 Help file:

  • Send To bar. Used to easily add files to a playlist, to Playing Now, or even to a device. Double-clicking on files will automatically send them to whatever destination you have chosen.
  • More flexible Media View. Now you can customize Media View to include custom fields, file location, and playlists, among other things
  • Simplified Interface
  • Inline File(s) Property Editing. Edit all fields from the content view.
  • Support for CD and DVD Database
  • Integrated CD Labeler Media Jukebox now has it's own labeler, that will automatically fill in fields for you.
  • Visualizations. Highly improved and customizable visualizations.
  • Visualization Studio. Create your own visualizations with this new tool.
  • New Freeform "mini-me" Skins. Media Jukebox now offers new "mini-me" modes, with it's own skins.
  • Expansive Id3 Tag Support. More flexibility with tagging. Can now remove tags, and save all fields into extended id3 v2 tags (including replay gain, custom fields, and rating)
  • On-the-fly Encoding

Another thing that was cool (for me) is that MJ now shows video INSIDE MJ instead of relying on an external window (although you can still do that too).
