I have found thumbnails are limited in Theater View by the following:

1. Sorting
Yes you can sort by any any means under "set rules for file display" but this is over ridden by what is actually displayed as thumbnail text.
Example: sort is set to [Album Artist]. (eg Dylan, Bob)
Display is showing as an expression [artist] and [year]. (eg Bob Dylan 1966)
The sort is based on the text that shows not what is set under "set rules for file display".
The work around is to display [album artist] first in the expression when you don't need it. (Minimise it by using font size and font alpha)
Is this the only way around this problem?

2. Number of thumbnail text lines is limited to 2 (unlike in standard view with no limit)

3. Inconsistent size of images
It would be great to "square off" all album covers.

4. Artist images only appear when the artist field is used on its own. Combine it within an expression (eg [artist] [year] ) and it reverts back to album covers.

1. Sorting under Set rules for file display sorts the file list.  I'm able to create sorting here that is independent of Caption text.

Set rules for file display to [album artist].
Appears in [artist] order every time here.
I use [album artist] to adjust christian name/surname.

3. This is already possible under options\Tree & View\Thumbnails.  Standardize aspect ratio.

3. Well I did not know this existed.  Quickly looked at my system and yes this was checked.  It obviously does not "square up" thumbnails in theatre view. Can easily pick difference between square images and others that are not, even if marginal (1071 x978).

I found that the change will not take place until MC is restarted. I just tried it and all my Covers are now the same size. I should mention that I am taking about movie covers (DVDs and Blu-rays).

I'm not sure what level you're at.

Sorting for the Category level is controlled by the Category: Setting: Sorting (under Details, right of Items to Show.  Edit one of the detail items there).

Sorting for the File List level is controlled by Set rules for file display sort modifiers, under Details, for a given Item to Show.
