Remote Control Details for MJ8?
« on: March 18, 2002, 02:25:49 pm »

What's the current plan for remote control use in MJ8? Will there be a new Girder plugin with expanded commands? Are you soliciting suggestions at this time (I had suggested some stuff earlier and was told to wait until MJ got into that phase of development)?

I'm just wondering because Full Screen mode is so much better than 7.2's was, but I have no real good way of navigating it with a remote, and I'm having a hard time getting Girder to reliably send keyboard commands to MJ (instead of whichever window happens to have the focus). Things worked so much better with the plugin.

I'm using the IRAssistant and it works fine (full screen and skin modes).

Hopefully we can release a Girder group before long that'll make setup a doodle.

Until then, program the VK_APPS (apps or menu) button, up, down, left, right, enter, and escape in Girder.  That should be all you really need in full screen mode.

Sometimes I still end up grapping for the mouse when the keyboard focus is lost, but mostly MJ works pretty good with Girder and my universal remote.

Matt, can you give me a hint on how to do this? I've figured out how to use the spy tool in Girder in order to better program it for MJ, but I can't seem to get the menu to show. I've found the apps and menu commands (I think they're the right ones) but I can't seem to get Girder to actually send that command to MJ's fullscreen mode. I've had to use the spy utility to get any of the non-plugin stuff to work, as the Target option in Girder doesn't seem to be accurately targetting MJ.

I think for things like keystrokes, you can just let Girder send them to the focused window.  No need to try to single out MJ for the keys like Up, Down, Left, Right, Escape, Apps, etc...

Hope that helps.

The only problem I've found with that is if something somehow manages to grab the focus, then suddenly those remote keys don't work right. If Girder can accurately target the correct application, then commands can reach MJ even if it's behind another window, or minimized or mini-me'd.
