Author Topic: Red October HQ - low processorload but still frames dropped  (Read 1892 times)

I have been running JRMC17 with custom filter settings and no problems, but just upgraded to JRMC18 and wanted to try the ROHQ. Even at default settings frames are dropped, and increasingly so with higher settings. Not really surprising, as my hardware is getting old. What does surprise me is that the processor load (monitored using Speedfan) remains at around 20 % on all four cores no matter what settings I use. I have not checked the use hardware accelleration box, which I thought meant that decoding is handled by the CPU, not GPU. Then why does the processor load stay low? And that means that the CPU is not the bottleneck, right? 

Processor: Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz
Graphics: ATI 5450

madVR (which Red October HQ uses) handles video scaling/processing on the GPU.
The hardware acceleration option is only for video decoding - which isn't that taxing on CPUs (or GPUs) these days.

You may have to reduce the scaling quality on a 5450.

Does that mean that my Q6600 will handle high(er) settings in madVR - all I need to do is replace my GPU?

With a faster card, you should be able to have the GPU handle decoding and scaling, rather than letting the CPU do the decoding.

I think a 5450 might be enough to at least use madVR though. Try setting the scaling options to bilinear and see if that works without dropping frames.

It does. What I really meant was: in order to take advantage of the more advanced algorithms of madVR can I simply replace my GPU? Or will my CPU quickly also become a bottleneck - needing upgrade?

I don't think the CPU will have much impact, as long as you aren't running into CPU-related problems now.

Microsoft have a process explorer or some similarly named program that will show you load on cpu/memory, network and gpu for each process.
It does not apply to DXVA (used in RO SQ), but for HQ it shows the additional load.

No, I haven't, but thanks for the tip.
Anyways, I have ordered an AMD HD7750 (without fan), we'll see that goes.
