remote laptop control
« on: March 03, 2003, 02:37:41 am »

Hello,
I have a laptop built for my car to play mp3's through MJ8. Question is, what is the best way to control it remotely. All I really want to do is have a method of skipping to the next song in "Now Playing" without having to mess with the keyboard.

Has anyone messed with trying to use the IrDA port with something like girder? Is irman the way to go? I thought I had once seen a small lcd screen for laptops that contained some control buttons(?).

There seem to be a number of ways to do this -  I'd love to hear from someone who has some experience setting this type of thing up.

Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thx,
Graham

I think direct serial control would be best for this application. To pull it off, you would need a keypad of some kind that connects to your laptop's serial port (I've used an integrated on with an LCD from Matrix Orbital).

I'm sure there are others around that don't require the LCD.

You would also need Girder and its serial control plugin to integrate the keypad with MJ. Check out http://www.girder.nl. I think there are folks on the forums on that site who have done something like this project.

You could also go with IR or even 802.11b & something like the Net remote program.

Good luck! Sounds like a fun project!
