I'm seeing some strange effects on the volume bar (there appear to be two one on top of the other) with MC 20 on Windows 10.  It seems to affect both the new skin and the older Modern Cards skins as well.  I've attached an image:

I have no issues on my win 8.1 and/or Linux machines.

You're using scaling in Windows 10? I'll see if there's something I can do about it. It doesn't happen with the progress slider? If not, then I think I know how to deal with this...

Yes I'm using scaling (150%). It doesn't seem to affect the progress slider at all.

Could you try extracting "main.xml" from the attached archive, and replace the existing one in the skin folder?

Thanks for a great looking skin! Everything is working well and not a bug in sight around here (Win10  MC21  32" 1920x1024).  Your hard work is appreciated  :D

Thank you! :) Happy to hear you haven't encountered any bugs so far, hunting them all down is always difficult due to the wide variety of setups out there.

Just started implementing support for detecting which version of Windows the skin is being used on, and offering correct windows close/max/min buttons accordingly. This will be included in the next update.

I also see that the skinning engine now allows for separating images served if you're using the scaling function or not. This means that I'll eventually support this functionality in my skin. It will take some time though, as it means I'll have to redraw every single image I've used in the skin, but I think it'll be well worth it in the end :)

My question is will the Mac and Ubuntu skins get any updates, e.g. perhaps just updated images? If so, I can post updated 1:1 perfect Mac stoplight (minimize/maximize/restore) images that's scaled to 2X, which I believe is already used in the Noire skin. I believe I can rip 2X minimize/maximize/restore images from Ubuntu, but I'll have to look.

I'll include window buttons for OSX in the next update :) As for Linux, for now I'll have to do as I did with the original skin and offer a separate edition of the skin. This is easy enough though, as all it takes is copying all the assets from the skin into a new folder, add the OS-specific window buttons and give it a different name.

At this point, the rest of the skin will otherwise look the same across all platforms, but that will probably change at a later point in time. I want to first offer a good selection of close/max/min/restore buttons across the various operating systems in use, then get started updating the skin for better HiDPI support. When that is done it'll be easier to offer more specific changes for OSX and Linux :)

No worries, it's easy enough to work around for now. Would be great if this was implemented at some point in the future though, as it would make it possible to properly support all operating systems that MC runs on with a single skin :)

Yep, perfectly aware of that but I might have an idea where it easily can be done. Instead of trying to detect the distro itself, wouldn't it better to detect the desktop environment being used? This can be done by running the following command;

Code: [Select]
echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
I know Ubuntu returns Unity and I'll have to check Debian 8.1 and Linux Mint 17.2 - Debian will probably return with GNOME/Xfce/KDE/LXDE/etc. and Linux Mint would probably return with Cinnamon or MATE.

This seems like a good idea to me. Even if some random distro should fail to set that variable, a skin would just fall back to the defaults anyway.

By the way, I've just pushed out an update to the skin with support for Windows 8, Windows 10 & OSX Yosemite window buttons :)

Yep, and there's some people who use different desktop environments e.g. installing GNOME on Ubuntu (or using Ubuntu GNOME) - detecting the distro wouldn't tell MC which buttons to use for example as one could be using a different DE. That way the skin will always match the DE's buttons, if available. ;)

I guess I'll see if I can rip the buttons from Ubuntu (Unity), Debian (GNOME) and Linux Mint (Cinnamon) at the max scale available within the next week. Then I'll rip Xfce and MATE's buttons. :)

EDIT: Found a list of what echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP can return - also found it should be used with echo $DESKTOP_SESSION you can gather which session is used (which is needed to detect KDE, apparently);

KDE:

XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=
GDMSESSION=kde-plasma

Unity 3d:

XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity
GDMSESSION=ubuntu

Unity 2d:

XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity
GDMSESSION=ubuntu-2d

Gnome:

XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME
GDMSESSION=gnome-shell

Gnome Classic:

XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME
GDMSESSION=gnome-classic

Gnome Classic (no effects):

XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME
GDMSESSION=gnome-fallback

Unity running with Mir:

XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity
GDMSESSION=ubuntu

Note MIR_SERVER_NAME is also set

MIR_SERVER_NAME=session-$NUMBER

Unity running without Mir:

XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity
GDMSESSION=ubuntu

XFCE:

XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=XFCE
GDMSESSION=xfce

I can confirm that Arch returns whatever desktop I'm using at the moment (e.g. Gnome or XFCE4), etc.  So that variable looks like a good way to suss it out.

Be aware that the "Plattform" tag - the thing where you can pick different images for different OS - is only working for MC 20.
I've tested it recently on MC 19 and Jukebox with the result that neither of the images will work.

Also I've noticed a tiny bug in Windows 10.
The minimize icon in the frames is on the wrong place. You can see it in the DSP Window.

What also can be improved is maybe the ListButtons. For me they are too tiny and hard to click at.
Also, on the first view there could be a slightly visible border around the MainWindow. Yes it looks more tidy without, but a border would fit better to Windows 10.

I really like the well implemented SplitViewTab and the unique scrollbars / sliders.
Well done :)

Thank you! I think that bug with the misplaced minimize icon sneaked in when I updated the skin to support the various window buttons. I'll be fixed when I upload the next version :)

Yeah, I don't like having to exclude the earlier releases of MC either (I think the OS detection was added in 20.0.118). On the other hand, doing things this way simplifies the workflow immensely. I may eventually end up separating out a select few editions of the skin and releasing them separately for those using old MC versions.

As for the ListButton, I do agree that it's a bit hard to hit. I'll see if I can't increase the size of the hitbox without actually increasing the size of the icon itself. If that doesn't work, I'll increase the icon size a bit for the next update.

I considered adding a border around the window, but ended up deciding against it in the end. My reasoning is that MC doesn't support hiding it while the window is maximized, and as I primarily use MC this way it ended up annoying me a bit. Then there's the thing where the border colour actually changes in Windows 10 if you change colour in the personalization settings, but on MC it would always end up having the colour I chose.

Ok, so work is progressing well on getting the skin ready for HiDPI/Retina scaling and such. A lot of the skin elements that absolutely needs to be redone in a higher resolution are completed. I'm now mostly working on creating hires icons. In the end I decided that Photoshop wasn't the best tool for this, as it would make scaling icons up/down in the future a hassle. So now I'm attempting to learn how to use Adobe Illustrator (Lynda.com's courses helps a lot). Completing this will take a whole lot of time (there are about 137 icons, in addition to those used in the action window. No way I'm replacing all of them in the near future...if ever). I'm keeping to the style I have in the released version of the skin, but they are getting a little hint of a material design look:

(these are just those under "playing now" in the sidebar. All icons are subject to change)

Here's a screenshot of the next version of my skin. I've mostly redone the relevant graphical elements to support the scaling functionality in MC. There's also some bugfixes and such, and I've redone the play/prev/next/stop/pause buttons in a Windows 10 style. I also did the same with the shuffle/repeat/dsp buttons. When I do release this version I'll really need some feedback from those of you that have HiDPI/retina displays, and use the scaling function in MC on how it works. I have very limited options for testing this myself, especially on Mac and Linux.

I like the new buttons!

I run at a high res (QHD), but don't believe it counts as retina.

That's what I'm using as well (along with a lower-res 1920x1200 one mostly dedicated to running MC). For the most part a 1440p monitor does everything I need, but it would have been great to have a 4k one to test on, seeing as there are more and more people use these kind of resolutions now. When I can afford it I think I'll have to consider upgrading, as it's hard to design and test for something you don't have available yourself.

Finally got the updated version of the Dark Ed. ready for release. See the first post of the thread for a download link and a preview image :)

Here's some of the changes since the last version I released:

* Support for skin scaling in MC. A whole bunch of graphic files were updated and re-done to enable this, and while there are a few left that needs some work this release should be very usable.
* Several bug-fixes (misaligned window buttons, and others).
* New playerbar button style (play, next, prev etc.) to better match Windows 10.
* Updated sidebar/tree icon style. Many of them will look similar to the old ones, but they all needed to be updated to work with the scaling function.

Looks great, Dirhael.
I like the playerbar buttons a lot.
The only thing that I noticed when using scaling is that the 'refresh' icon got cut off at larger sizes. The tab bar height doesn't 'grow' enough to accommodate it. I don't really use scaling much, so not an issue for me. Just thought I'd mention it.

Thanks, again, for a great looking skin!

Looks great, Dirhael.
I like the playerbar buttons a lot.

There's not really any way to solve that in the skin itself (it happens in the default skins as well, it's just more noticeable with the larger refresh icon I'm using), you'll have to set a larger font size in Options -> Tree & View -> Select font to have it look "just right".

Thanks! I'll try to get started with the light version sometime during this weekend. Have been a lot to do at work and such lately, so haven't had the time or energy to work on personal projects when I get home. This weekend will be a bit longer than usual though, so perhaps... :)

Hey,

first of all big thanks to Dirhael for this beautiful skin and your work to constantly improve it.

I really like the fact it just keep looking elegant if colors are inverted, which is my office-setting for jriver (with a touch less contrast+brightnes in settings)

Sometimes I would prefer to make the standart-view even smaller which is possible with Noire for example.  Any ideas?  I haven't yet found a workaround.

my specs: win10, jrmc21, 2560x1440 27", win scaling 125% (sometimes 1920x1080 because some audio software fails with scaling 3rd party plugins)

kind regards

Congrats on the great JR skin, great looking skin.

have a small bug report... i use windows 10 and set display/text scaling to 150% in windows display options, as i use big screen TV. only problem with that is modern cards X close button disappears, but is there with other jriver skins. To make X close button reappear, have to set skin size to 50% in JR, or back to 100% scaling in windows 10 settings.

There have been recent changes to JRiver's skinning engine which goofed up the button placement on third party skins.  It's not just the main window, sub windows are spawned without x's or without window controls at all too.  Hopefully this will get fixed as this is my favorite skin!

I think these two skins are amazing. Something like that should ship as default with MC. This is the first time I can say that my library looks good.

I hope you will continue your great work and I hope we will see a Theater View skin as well.

Which window(s)? I'm still using a custom fork of the skins from last year, however I've recently updated the skins to account for the multiple OS support (including Linux now). So far windows are looking fine for me (about window, DSP studio, playback options, options, etc.).

happens when Windows 10 text/display scaling, under Windows display properties, is set to larger than 100%. all JRiver windows the x disappears using modern cards black, but not with other skins.

Also happens when upping the scaling within MC for the latest version of the dark skin - even 110% does it.

Thought so, since my custom skins are using the older version from a year ago as a base (pre-scaling support), it's a non-issue.

Is there anything specific that needs to be done to get this to work on Ubuntu 15.10? I installed the folders into the correct places but the skin does not show up in the the View => Skin menu.

Sorry it took so long for me to reply, real life worries kept me away from the forum and skinning for a while :-[

I've looked into the problem, and fixed it. I'll upload a new version later this evening. For those of you interested, here's a diff of what needed changing:
