Restore v6 license? But FTP site is USELESS!
« on: March 13, 2002, 05:25:30 pm »

So I have read the posts, read the FAQ, and I happily run off to the ftp site to download MJ6 again and restore my old license so I can upgrade to 7.x...

Hmm.. How strange... The file I downloaded opens up a little install window that says it's installing 7.2....

Hmm... Well lookit that! On the ftp site, the files older than v7 are actually just little links pointing to the newest file now!

Lovely...

Help? Anyone know where to get v6?

You can just restore your version 6 license into 7.2 without having to install version 6 first.

Hmm. I'm gettin the same thing everyone else seems to get... Restore, and it pretends like you didn't do anything at all... Tried cleaning my reg, maybe I missed something. Sigh.

I sure have seen a lot better support from other products, to tell the truth. I'm about ready to flip back over to MusicMatch or something.

What is the name of the file and where did it come from?  If you want help, providing details will improve your chances.

All of the mediajukebox?.exe files at ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music up through 6 are apparently the same thing. I downloaded each and every one of them, and when I run each one, the install window says it's installing 7.2... What gives?

Did someone go and replace every one of the old versions with 7.2, or is the install program "seeing" my old install of 7.2 and running that instead? How am I supposed to follow the FAQ instructions and install v6 when they are have been turned into 7.2?

What's the name of your license file?

Yes, all of the versions on the FTP site are now 7.2, except for the version 8 beta that's there as well.

Version 7 should restore a version 6 license just fine. If it's not, then I'm not sure what to tell you as I've never had that problem. Others have, and maybe those others can offer some advice about what to do IF you calm down and ask nicely. You'll find that the support here is very good if you give the people here a little respect.

Well, I have no problem with the people here. The community is very supportive. However, being as I actually paid for this product, I would expect a little more than freeware level support from the company who makes the program. Going through their FTP site and replacing all of the old files with the new version, but *leaving the names the same* just makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. There's no note, not even a little readme.txt explaining why. The FAQ tells you to reinstall version 6 if faced with the exact problem I have. It's horribly frustrating to deal with this lack of support from a company that I have patronized.

The reason is that many web sites that link to us don't keep their links up to date.  We don't archive old versions.  Sorry you don't approve.

Would it have killed someone to stick a readme.txt simply explaining that? Or even better, maybe moving the real archived older versions into a subdirectory, so that people coming to the ftp site, and following the instructions in the FAQ might actually be able to do what the FAQ says to do? I mean really. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to do, if someone just took a little bit of time to do it. I realize that you can't expect too much active customer support for a $25 program, but still. 30 seconds to make a text file and stick it in the FTP directory?

For a person with a lot of ideas like yourself, I think the best approach might be to set up and maintain your own web site, ftp site, and start writing a program.

Somehow we've managed to stumble along before you started complaining.

Next time you download files, checking the file size in ftp might prevent anguish.

It's very amusing, to see a company trying to shift the onus of responsibility back onto the consumer in a case like this. If you don't want people to use their older version keys when they upgrade to your latest version, you should just say so. Simply yanking the rug out from under us, then telling us that if we had been paying attention we would have *known* that these were all the same things is the kind of rhetoric that serves to only disenfranchise people from your brand.

Since when does customer service mean "If you're so smart, why don't you write your own damned program"? I used to recommend this product to my friends because of its great features and ease of use, but I think from now on I'll be steering them away from it instead.

What incentive do I have to stay with JRiver's software now? Am I just one consumer, so it doesn't matter? That kind of attitude quickly becomes many consumers. A little bit of caring would have gone a long way in this situation. Even if someone at JRiver had just stepped up and said "Sorry guy, but we don't have the space on our server to keep all the older versions." Instead, I got "Sorry guy, you should have known better than to just follow our own instructions."

Bah.

Hey thanks for the offer. I looked through google, and all the places I
found kept trying to pull it off of the ftp site, and of course that just
got me lots more copies of 7.2.... =)

If you could email it to me, that would be great. (I have a high speed

WEll, here's the thing. I'm a typical mainstream joe-consumer type. I'm not a heavy techie. I don't go down the the local small computer store, buy OEM parts, and assemble my own machine. I go out and get a whole new Dell or something when I can afford an upgrade. As such, it's very frustrating for me to be told my a company that I should be the one who has to hunt down their older versions of software on the internet.

Yes, I do back up my software, but after a couple versions, I tend to purge the old CD's. Otherwise I would have stacks and stacks of CDR's sitting around. Maybe that's fine for some people, but it just annoys me.

What I'm getting at, is that there is a kind of "elitist" mentality that goes along with smaller software companies such as JRiver / MediaJukebox who cater to the shareware audience. It's the same mindset that makes people hate anyone @aol.com, or despise those who ask what regedit does. I'm a little above that level, but still. Should I be punished because I haven't had the time or inclination to go out and spend the time learning everything there is to know about computers? It's like being scorned by your mechanic because you've never personally dropped in a camshaft or rebuilt your transmission. I guess perhaps I have purchased a product not intended for the general public, but rather intended for a very small niche in the computing world.
