Stream from Android tablet to PC
« on: September 18, 2013, 11:36:28 am »

I would like to stream audio from my tablet (Nexus 7) to my PC. Is there a way to do this?

I've already set up Gizmo to stream from JRMC18 to my tablet and it works great. However, there are a few tablet apps that I prefer for podcasts, etc. and would prefer to use (the UI for an app called Pocket Casts is infinitely better than the podcast feature in MC and there are other apps like TuneIn Radio and Umano that I would like to stream to my PC and play over my home stereo as well).

So, is there a way to use an app like BubbleUPnP on my tablet and set up MC as a UPnP/DLNA receiver?

Are there other methods anyone can recommend?

You can use a DLNA server app on the tablet to stream onboard media to MC (enabling MC as a DLNA renderer in its options) but whether or not there are any that will relay online media sources such as TuneIn via DLNA I don't know.

It worked! Sort of...

I enabled MC as a DLNA renderer and am able to stream from my tablet to my PC using the Android app 'BubbleUPnP'.

But, like you mentioned, so far I can't relay the audio from my apps (TuneIn Radio, Pocket Cast) to the output of BubbleUPnP. I don't care about streaming my MC library to my PC, I've always been able to do that and I can even control it with Gizmo if I want.

To get BubbleUPnP, you have to pick a rendering device and a library. I've set the rendering device in BubbleUPnP to one of my MC outputs. Under the libraries I can choose between the media shares that it finds on my network or from the libraries on my Nexus 7. So the only media shares I have are the ones that are enabled in my network settings that stream using WMP. Since I haven't imported my music collection into WMP, nothing appears except a couple sample files (BTW, last time I added my music collection to a WMP library, it messed with my tags, so I don't want that to happen again. Besides MC is much better for music playback.). I'm surprised that the local music on my Nexus 7's 'Google Play Music' app aren't appearing on the list of local device libraries.

It would be great if I could set it to grab any audio that is played from the Nexus 7, but that doesn't seem possible.

I enabled MC as a DLNA renderer and am able to stream from my tablet to my PC using the Android app 'BubbleUPnP'.

I think what's happening here is that you are connecting to your PC's MC server via DLNA and simply sending music to itself as a DLNA renderer, which is what you can do with Gizmo anyway without DLNA, as you say!  DLNA is just an extra layer that is not necessary in this scenario. If you had a DLNA server app on the tablet then it would allow you to send music that is on the tablet to the PC, which is halfway there to what you want. The built-in library on the tablet does not inherently expose itself via DLNA so that is probably why you are not able to select that. (Although you say BubblePNP allows you to select local libraries on the tablet??) But you want to be able to stream online stuff from the tablet to the PC which probably DLNA controllers won't do.

Another option to explore is to set up your online stuff via Connected Media in MC itself on the PC. Then you might be able to get Gizmo to see these things. In this case, it would be the PC itself that is accessing the online stuff as well as playing it, you would just be using Gizmo as a remote control for MC. Which is what it is! I'm not familiar with setting up Connected Media so I'm not sure if it would work, but you could ask some questions in a Gizmo thread.

I have used Connected Media for playback of online content and it would probably work with Gizmo, but it isn't a very good solution.

The functionality for Connected Media is very basic and the UI isn't very good as far as I can tell, especially when compared to the popular Android apps like TuneIn and Pocket Casts. Gizmo is OK for playing my MC library, but the Gizmo UI is still pretty mediocre compared to other Android media players.

It would be great if JRiver updated their Connected Media feature to have the functionality equal to these Android apps and then improve the Gizmo UI, but I doubt that will happen.
