On both my systems MC no longer remembers size and position. Started with .94 I think. On one I removed the .jriver folder to see if its something in my settings but that didn't help.

MC has started to crash almost immediately after launch. I removed the .jriver folder, I've removed the package and reinstalled. Doesn't seem to have any effect.

I'll try an older version see what happens.

Hi bob,
if you play around with the OPTIONs or oher main menu options, MC freezes up for a long time or even stays locked for minutes. During this lockouts, I had heavy of traffic on my network (NFS) and the time display in the playing window says: Waiting. It looks like mc is scanning the entire database....

Hi, just installed MC 19.0.102 today, similar experience like the others, MC Closes almost immediately. 2 attempts to deinstall and install again failed. Older Version worked without any Troubles...

Interesting, it works fine on my home machine as always (debian wheezy 32 bit).
I'm wondering if one of the plugins is broken. hmmm just did some testing and mine all work.
The upgrade might not remove a prior plugin. I was playing around with the wavepack and musepack ones. The musepack one was definitely working. The WP not.
As far as I recall though, those plugins were not supposed to be getting registered in this release.
You could try cleaning out /usr/lib/jriver and then re-installing the 102 deb. Other than the settings, that would be a clean install.

You people that are having issues should also state your architecture and distro.
We build only on debian wheezy i386.
I do light testing on ubuntu 13.10 x86_64, Mint 15 and Olive before uploading the build.
If you are using another distro, you should note that when packages in the build system change you might have to pay attention to this in your attempts to get it working on the other distros.
For example, I noticed that libcurl changed recently.
If you are on wheezy, make sure your system is up to date.

Some of the versions in the debian control file are a bit out of date, if you are on a foreign architecture these especially may cause you issues:
libcurl3 (>= 7.26), libc6 (>= 2.17)

Note however as I said before MC ran on Ubuntu 13.10 amd64 and Mint 15. These systems were up to date.

I'm thinking you might have to use the hardware device.

MC isn't being built for that distro and it may be too old since it's not fully multiarch aware.

You could try this idea from stack-overflow...

If you do not want to install recomended packages you can run apt-get with the --no-install-recommends flag or aptitude with the --without-recommends/-R flag.

I think I am using a hw device, the spdif (IEC958) port on the USB device. Maybe this goes via pulseaudio? I've booted my PC in Windows right now so I can not check (got two m-sata disks which I am swapping). I'll test the different hw devices on next try.

In this case a 'device' is not meant in the physical sense, but rather a way to access your hardware on Linux.

Try running the command 'aplay -L' in a terminal. On some systems it will also tell you what each 'device' does.

For instance, a device preceded by 'hw:' means direct hardware access without any conversions. 'plughw:' on the other hand has all software conversions applied by the system. Devices with the 'dmix' prefix uses the system mixer to allow multiple applications simultaneous access to sound devices.

What you want is up to you. If you want to hear other sounds while playing music with MC, you can use 'dmix' or possibly 'default' works for you as well. If you want the best possible sound, try the devices with the 'hw' prefix.

Unfortuntately how this works depends on the system, its different for each distribution and might even differ between patch levels, I'm not sure. If you like, you can paste the output of 'aplay -L' and we'll have a look too.

I'm on a clean install of Mint 16 at the moment, but MC isn't remembering playback device, size and location for instance. But playing now is remembered.

I checked the permissions in .jriver, its all fine.

I've only noticed that size and location isn't remembered (at random, sometimes it works) when using Debian Wheezy, Debian Jessie and Linux Mint 16 (Cinnamon) - it defaults to a small window on start. However, it seems to work completely fine on Ubuntu. Playback device was remembered in my testing.

Well it worked fine on Debian Wheezy and Jessie. With Mint I started having this problem.

Since I don't know what I want yet I'm now on Ubuntu 13.10 with Gnome 3.10 (I really don't like Unity). I'll install MC tomorrow and see where that leads.

It's possible the device list is changing based on permissions or something, just guessing since I don't know your setup.
The device list is dynamic, it's checked every time you enter the audio settings.

I noticed on distros that don't add the user to the audio group, the hardware devices don't show up.
If pulseaudio isn't running pulse doesn't show up.

The last device chosen is stored in the "registry" as a string, then used when the device is opened or looked for to display as the current device when you enter that device  dialog again. If the stored string doesn't exist, MC reverts to "default".

Either way, I'm jumping around between distros trying to find something I'm happy with. Mint and Ubuntu are gone again .

I'm back at Debian, Jessie. Installed a bare netinst and compiled Cinnamon 2 from source (it wouldn't compile properly on wheezy, hence im on jessie).

Debian would be your best choice, not just because its being developed but also because Debian is one of most stable distro's.

Mint is Ubuntu, which are Debian-based but not base-compatible with Debian. LMDE is base-compatible with Debian however. Its basically Debian Testing and supposed to be semi-rolling but my experience is it doesn't get enough updates, last time I checked its way behind on updates compared to current debian testing.

YMMV with any of these distro's. There's some trouble on both Mint and Ubuntu that people don't have on Debian, but I think most people get it to work reasonably well.

We are still in beta so there isn't a licensed version yet.
I'm mystified by ubuntu complaining about the recommended, they are not required.
That said you could unpack the .deb into a directory called mcunpack as follows.
If you don't have rsync, install it.
