Upsampling to DSD64/DSD128 with Mac?

(1/6) > >>

jtwrace:
I was able to get to a buddies house tonight and he's using MC19 (Windows)...I want to know if/when this will available for Mac.

I don't know how or why but  ;D

bplexico:
Hello! MC19 for Mac supports playback of PCM files in DSD64 format. I was using that last night in fact for some 16/44.1 and 24/292 files.

I am not sure however if there is a manner to have it playback those same files in DSD128. Does anyone know?

bplexico:
Oh and one other thing, as your DAC will only support DSD64, everything thing you desire is already available and thus awaits your return home (other than that little issue with SL, which hopefully is now fixed)

jtwrace:
Sheesh.  Another memo I must have missed.   :(

How do we do this?  Is there a sonic advantage of upsampling to DSD64 or DSD128?  Does 128 really sound better?  Is there proof that it can and does?

I heard it last night at a buddies house at RMAF and thought it did but what do the software guys say?

bplexico:
I can answer how to configure it in MC19 for Mac which is as follows:

Tools->Options->Audio->DSP & output format-> Output encoding

As to the why, some believe that sending the output as DSD is beneficial to DACs composed of chips that optimally sound best with DSD as opposed to PCM. An example of this would be DACs using the ESS Sabre chip. Again this is a belief many have, others enjoy the sound of DSD in their system better than PCM.

I have not A/B's enough to come to any conclusions on my DAC which is a R2R DAC.

I also don't think DSD128 is enabled for the Mac yet, though I am happy to be wrong.

And here is a Mac MC19 screenshot:
