Volume Leveling and multiple album versions
« on: September 21, 2013, 10:47:15 am »

I have quite a few albums in different versions, differently mastered and therefore with volume differences in the source. I track these versions in custom tags, [Album Version] (ex: MFSL cat#, 40th Anniversary, 1990 Remaster) and [Source] (ex: CD, Vinyl, SACD, HDTracks).

Ideally, what I like to accomplish is for MC to play 2 identical tracks from different mastering versions at the same loudness level without having to change the album tag.

Any tips on how I can do this?

I'm finding this to be a problem as well. I use [Description] to specify what version of an album I have, and Media Center thinks they're all the same one.

...and I specify what version by adding a suffix to the Album name.
For example: Christine Perfect [UK LP] stereo

I wonder if at this point it make sense to have a new field, for example:

   Album Version

which has the following properties:

   1. The album analyzer includes it as part of the album title
   2. AlbumKey() includes it to distinguish unique albums
   3. The Group header Album includes it to create unique groupings

The latter solves a long standing problem that requires explanation to resolve.

And that's exactly what I don't want to do but unfortunately it seems the only way to force VL/AV into the correct operating mode.

And this is the conflict - we've been giving advice to not include these items in the Album title, because it confounds art and track look ups.

But for folks that have multiple versions of an album, the album analyzer needs to distinguish between variants, so one needs to include something to distinguish between variants.

Absolutely, I have renamed all of my albums with multiple versions because of this.

People have suggested using tags in the past to force MC into a particular mode (album/track based) but I think a better solution would be to have an expression field in volume leveling options somewhere to manipulate the way MC evaluates what volume leveling mode to use. Adding a library field to the expression would simply add that field to the equation, but it would also allow more complex expressions like evaluating volume level field values.

Either way, a solution to this dilemma would be nice. Hopefully this can be given some thought.

Thanks.

yes, please.

This would also resolve the problem with Gizmo, where I want to listen to Pink Floyd - Animals, but it shows about 20 tracks, because of all the different versions I have.
