Album Artist Field Question

Can someone please tell me what the difference is between the Artist field and Album Artist field? Does it matter if Album Artist is blank?

I understand it as the Album Artist would be the main Artist of the album. The Artist field could contain the names of the main artist and another artist as in a duet. I recently populated the Album Artist field of my library.
